Louisiana scores season-high in runs; Victorian, Brooks return to make '26 debut
Murphy Brooks (1-0), making his first appearance on the mound since June 2, 2024, earned the win after tossing 1.2 innings. He allowed only a bunt single and struck out two, throwing 17 pitches with 11 for strikes. JR Tollett pitched the final three innings, allowing one unearned run to record his first save of the season.
Louisiana (23-17) finished with 13 hits, marking its fourth consecutive game with double-digit hits. Mark Collins, Maddox Mandino, Blaze Rodriguez and Steven Spalitta each recorded two hits, with Spalitta driving in three runs on a double and a triple.
Drew Markle hit his fourth home run of the season, while Lee Amedee added his third homer and drove in three runs. Amedee also extended his on-base streak to 22 consecutive games.
Shaun Marte (1-2) took the loss for Grambling (14-25) after allowing six hits and six earned runs in three innings. The Tigers collected nine hits, with Martavius Thomas recording three and Aiden Lopez adding two.
Grambling took a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Louisiana starter Landon Victorian, who was making his debut for the Cajuns in his first mound appearance in over a year following a transfer from Oklahoma. Victorian allowed three runs, one hit, struck out one and walked three.
Louisiana answered in the second inning on Spalitta's RBI triple and a sacrifice fly by Donovan LaSalle to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Cajuns took the lead for good in the third. Collins singled and Amedee was hit by a pitch before Colt Brown delivered an RBI single. Rigoberto Hernandez followed with a run-scoring single, and Spalitta's two-run double gave Louisiana a 6-3 advantage.
Markle led off the fourth with a home run down the left-field line, and Amedee followed three batters later with a two-run blast to right-center, extending the lead to 9-3.
Louisiana added four more runs in the fifth, taking advantage of Grambling's control issues, with Rodriguez delivering an RBI double.
Grambling scored four runs, two earned, in the later innings, but Louisiana answered with two runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Mandino and Noah Lewis. Tollett closed the game efficiently, needing just 31 pitches over the final three innings – including eight in the ninth where he was one strike shy of an Immaculate Inning.
Louisiana returns to the road this weekend for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Arkansas State. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m., with Saturday's game also set for 6 p.m. and Sunday's finale scheduled for 1 p.m.
