Cajuns take final two games to claim series over top-10 Golden Eagles
Â
Donovan LaSalle and Colt Brown each drove in two runs for the Ragin' Cajuns (21-15, 6-9 SBC), who rebounded from a Friday night loss to win the final two games of the series.
Â
Smith (2-3) entered with one out in the fourth inning and Louisiana holding a 4-3 lead. He surrendered an RBI double to Joey Urban before retiring six consecutive batters. Seth Smith later added a solo home run that trimmed the Cajuns' lead to 6-5.
Â
Brasch earned his fifth save of the season, pitching the final three innings. He retired the first four batters he faced, worked out of trouble in the eighth by striking out Urban, and closed the game in the ninth with help from a 5-4-3 double play started by Drew Markle before inducing a groundout to second.
Â
Louisiana built a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Southern Miss starter Thomas Crabtree. Rigoberto Hernandez led off with a double, Josh Lim followed with a bunt single, and Brown delivered an RBI single to right. After a double play, Noah Lewis and Blaze Rodriguez drew walks before LaSalle added a two-run single to left-center.
Â
Southern Miss (25-11, 8-7 SBC) answered in the third against Cajuns starter Ty Roman. Smith and Urban opened with singles, and Davis Gillespie drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Matthew Russo singled and Drew Barrett walked before a throwing error on a ground ball allowed two runs to score, tying the game.
Â
The Cajuns regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Lee Amedee walked and later scored on Brown's sacrifice fly. Southern Miss evened the score again in the fourth when Smith walked and scored on Urban's double.
Â
Louisiana took the lead for good later in the inning. LaSalle and Markle were hit by pitches with one out, and Amedee was also hit to load the bases. Hernandez then drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run. The Cajuns added an insurance run in the fifth when Amedee again walked with the bases loaded.
Â
Roman worked 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs. Louisiana capitalized on eight free passes throughout the game, scoring four of its six runs from batters who reached via walk or hit by pitch.
Â
Lim went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead Louisiana, which was held hitless over the final 4.2 innings and stranded 10 runners on base. Â
Â
Josh Och (3-1), the third of six pitchers used by the Golden Eagles, took the loss. Smith and Urban had three hits each as Southern Miss finished with 10 hits and left nine men on base.
Â
Louisiana returns to action Friday, opening a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Troy.
