Ragin' Cajuns win for ninth time in past 11 games; will visit Texas State in final SBC series

HOUSTON – The No. 25-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns scored three runs without the benefit of a base hit in the 10th inning Wednesday to defeat Big 12 opponent Houston, 6-3, at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.

Cody Brasch (2-1) retired all eight batters he faced, striking out five, to earn the victory. He entered the game in the eighth inning after Houston (12-8) scored the tying run and loaded the bases with one out. Brasch struck out Blake Fields and Antonelli Savattere to end the threat and set the stage for the decisive 10th inning.

Donovan LaSalle was hit by a pitch from Kendall Hoffman (1-2), who was making his first relief appearance of the season after five starts. Hoffman then walked Drew Markle and hit Lee Amedee to load the bases.

Connor Udland relieved Hoffman and induced Rigoberto Hernandez to hit a ground ball to first, but McClane Helton's throw to the plate was low, allowing LaSalle to score the go-ahead run. Colt Brown followed with a groundout that drove in the second run, and Amedee later scored on a wild pitch for the final margin.

Left-hander Ty Roman handcuffed the Cougars through the first five innings, allowing only Riley Jackson's solo homer to lead off the second. In the sixth, Helton singled with one out and moved into scoring position after Xavier Perez struck out. Tre Broussard followed with an RBI single that scored Helton. Roman then walked Carsten Sabathia before Parker Smith retired Blake Fields on a popup to end the inning.

Houston tied the game in the eighth, drawing a pair of one-out walks from Tyler Papenbrock. Garret Carter then allowed Sabathia's single through the left side that plated the tying run before Brasch entered and recorded the final two outs.

Louisiana (16-5) answered Jackson's homer with two runs against Houston starter Caden Cooper. Noah Lewis led off the inning with a bunt single and moved into scoring position before scoring on Markle's double into the gap. Amedee followed with an RBI single to give the Cajuns a 2-1 lead.

Brown extended the advantage in the fourth inning with his first collegiate home run, a drive over the left-field wall that pushed the lead to 3-1 before Houston began its comeback.

The win, Louisiana's ninth in its last 11 games, sends the Cajuns to San Marcos, Texas, for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against Texas State. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark in the final scheduled SBC meetings between the two teams.
