Ragin' Cajuns begin four-game Lone Star State swing with visit to Big 12 Cougars

HOUSTON – The No. 25 Louisiana baseball team opens a four-game swing through the Lone Star State on Wednesday when it visits Big 12 opponent Houston for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
 
The game will be streamed on ESPN+, while fans can listen locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide through the Varsity Network app.
 
Louisiana (15-5) makes its second trip to the Space City this season after earning a 3-0 victory at Rice on Feb. 17. The Ragin' Cajuns will face Houston (12-7) on its home campus for the first time since the 2016 season and meet the Cougars for the first time since the 2024 Astros Foundation College Classic at Daikin Park.
 
The Cajuns claimed two of three games from South Alabama in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams last weekend, while Houston dropped two of three games to Kansas State in its Big 12-opening series.
 
Louisiana is expected to start left-hander Ty Roman (1-2, 6.97 ERA), while Houston will counter with freshman right-hander Caden Cooper (1-0, 1.69 ERA).
 
Following Wednesday's contest, Louisiana will continue its trip through Texas beginning Friday when it opens a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Texas State.

LEADING OFF
• No. 25-ranked Louisiana heads to the Lone Star State for the third and final time during the regular season, with its second midweek trip to Houston, when it faces Big 12 opponent Houston on Wednesday.
• The Ragin' Cajuns will play four games in the state of Texas this week, beginning with their first trip to play UH at Schroeder Park since 2016, before heading west to San Marcos to face Texas State in the final Sun Belt Conference weekend series between the clubs.
• Louisiana's previous trip to Space City was on February 17 when the Ragin' Cajuns blanked Rice, 3-0, at Reckling Park.
• The Ragin' Cajuns traveled to the DFW Metroplex on March 6-8, taking two of three games from Dallas Baptist.
• Louisiana, ranked No. 25 by D1Baseball and the NCBWA, and No. 22 by Perfect Game, opened SBC play last weekend taking two of three games from South Alabama.
• Louisiana is hitting .258 as a team with 168 hits and 112 runs scored through its first 20 games.
• Freshman catcher Colt Brown has been one of the club's most consistent bats, leading the Cajuns with a .347 average while recording 25 hits and an 11-game hitting streak entering the week.
• Lee Amedee and Drew Markle have also produced steady numbers in the middle of the order, each collecting 20 hits on the season, while Rigoberto Hernandez has driven in a team-high 13 runs and added three home runs.
• The Cajuns have been solid with a .983 fielding percentage and have turned 15 double plays, helping support a pitching staff that has limited opponents to a .221 batting average.
Louisiana is 12-1 this season when leading after six innings and has won seven of nine games decided by one run.
 
SCOUTING UH
• Houston wrapped up its series against Kansas State with a 16-6, run-rule victory in eight innings. The win was the Cougars' third run-rule win in its last five games.
• Wednesday marks Houston's third game against a ranked opponent this season. The Cougars opened the season with an 8-2 win over No. 21 Wake Forest but fell to 19th-ranked Oregon State, 2-1, at the Frisco Classic.
• Tyler Cox (.314-1-5), Jackson LaLima (.308-4-13) and Xavier Perez (.307-4-15) are the top regulars in the UH lineup with Tre Broussard (.483-2-12) and Carsten Sabathia III (.359-5-13) providing a spark on offense.
• UH enters the game with a .296 average at the plate with 22 home runs and averaging 7.0 runs per game.
• As a staff, the Cougars have posted a 5.30 earned run average while averaging 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
