Ragin' Cajuns head west to face Houston, Texas State
LAFAYETTE – JR Tollett and Cody Brasch combined on a four-hitter as Louisiana claimed its opening Sun Belt Conference series with a 3-1 victory over South Alabama on Sunday before an announced crowd of 3,507 at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Â
Rigoberto Hernandez collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs for Louisiana (15-5, 2-1 SBC), which allowed a first-inning run before shutting down South Alabama (13-7, 1-2 SBC) over the final eight innings.
Â
Tollett (4-0) worked seven strong innings in his second quality start of the season for Louisiana, allowing three hits overall and one run in the opening frame. The right-hander walked two and struck out six in an 88-pitch effort. Brasch pitched the final two innings, giving up one hit and two walks while striking out three to record his third save of the season.
Â
South Alabama took an early lead in the first inning when Brennon Wright was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a base hit by Marc Stephens.
Â
Louisiana answered in the bottom of the inning against South Alabama starter Daniel Gonzalez (1-2). Donovan LaSalle was hit by a pitch and later scored when Drew Markle lined a triple into the left-center field gap to tie the game. Hernandez followed with a one-out single to right field that plated Markle and gave the Cajuns a 2-1 lead.
Â
Tollett worked out of trouble in the second inning after allowing the first two runners to reach base. He responded with a strikeout and a force out before making an athletic play on a bunt by Ethan Melton to end the threat.
Â
South Alabama mounted another challenge in the fifth when Melton singled with one out and Wright drew a walk. LaSalle preserved the lead with a diving catch on a wind-blown pop-up off the bat of Duncan Mathews and fired to first to complete the Cajuns' third double play of the game.
Â
Tollett retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings before handing the ball to Brasch.
Â
Louisiana added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Noah Lewis drew a walk and moved to second after Lee Amedee was hit by a pitch following two strikeouts. Hernandez delivered again, lining an RBI single to extend the Cajuns' lead to 3-1.
Â
Gonzales pitched five innings for South Alabama, allowing five hits and three runs. He walked two and struck out seven.
Â
The victory capped a 3-1 week for Louisiana. The Cajuns travel Wednesday to face Big 12 opponent Houston at 6:30 p.m. before opening a weekend Sun Belt series against Texas State – the final weekend conference series between the schools – in San Marcos, Texas.
