Rodriguez's Walk-Off Helps Cajuns Complete Sweep of Maryland, 6-5

Louisiana wins fifth straight in 15-inning marathon; will host K-State beginning Tuesday

LAFAYETTE – Freshman Blaze Rodriguez delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon Sunday, lining a two-out single to left-center in the 15th inning to score Steven Spalitta and lift Louisiana to a 6-5 victory over Maryland at Russo Park.

With the win, Louisiana (5-2) completed a three-game sweep and extended its winning streak to five games in a four-hour, 45-minute marathon. The Ragin' Cajuns have now won five of six all-time meetings with the Terrapins (3-4), four in walk-off fashion.

Spalitta ignited the decisive rally with two outs in the 15th, ripping a double down the right-field line for his first extra-base hit of the season. Facing Maryland reliever Ryan Bailey (0-1), Rodriguez followed by lacing a 1-0 pitch into the gap, allowing Spalitta to score easily from second as the Cajuns poured out of the dugout in celebration.

Freshman Hayden Pearson (1-0), Louisiana's sixth pitcher of the game, earned his first collegiate victory. Pearson retired Maryland in order in the top of the 15th, capping eight consecutive scoreless innings by the Cajuns' pitching staff.

The game settled into a pitcher's duel in the late innings. Maryland reliever Logan Hastings was dominant after entering in the sixth, retiring 16 consecutive batters at one point. Hastings worked 7.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out seven on 102 pitches.

Louisiana's Cody Brasch matched him nearly pitch for pitch. Brasch relieved Garret Carter in the seventh and threw five innings, surrendering two hits with three walks and six strikeouts before Parker Smith took over in the 13th.

Rodriguez led Louisiana's 14-hit attack with five hits. Spalitta, freshman Colt Brown and senior Rigoberto Hernandez added two hits each as the Cajuns outhit Maryland for the third straight game. Ryan Costello and David Mendez combined for five of the Terrapins' eight hits.

Maryland struck first against Cajuns starter JR Tollett. Braydon Martin singled against the shift before Costello launched a two-run homer for a 2-0 lead.

Louisiana answered in the bottom of the first against Jake Yeager. Brown doubled to left-center and later scored on Rodriguez's infield single. After Hernandez reached on a misplayed fly ball that allowed Rodriguez to score the tying run, Drew Markle singled home Hernandez. Markle stole second and scored on a Maddox Mandino double, giving Louisiana a 4-2 advantage.

Back-to-back home runs by Costello and Mendez in the sixth tied the game at 4. Hernandez responded in the bottom half with an RBI double to put Louisiana back in front, 5-4. The Terrapins evened the score in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Martin after a pair of walks and a single.

From there, both bullpens held firm until Rodriguez's decisive hit in the 15th.

For the series, Louisiana outscored Maryland 22-12 and outhit the Terrapins, 35-21.

The Ragin' Cajuns continue their nine-game homestand Tuesday and Wednesday when they host Kansas State in a two-game series. Wednesday's game will air on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to both games locally on 96.5 KPEL-FM and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
