Red hot Ragin' Cajuns host Big 12 Wildcats in two-game, midweek series
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team returns to M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park this week, hosting Big 12 opponent Kansas State in a two-game midweek series beginning Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Wednesday's contest will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can listen to both games locally on KPEL-FM (96.5 FM) and worldwide via the Varsity Network app.
Louisiana (5-2) brings a five-game winning streak into the series after sweeping Maryland over the weekend. The Cajuns capped the three-game set with a 6-5 victory in 15 innings on Sunday, grinding through a four-hour, 45-minute finale to secure the sweep.
Through seven games, Louisiana is batting .265 as a team with 67 hits and 48 runs scored. The Cajuns are 4-0 this season when scoring six or more runs and 4-0 when playing error-free baseball.
Freshman Blaze Rodriguez has provided an immediate spark, leading the team with a .370 average, 10 hits and seven RBIs. The Slidell native owns a .485 on-base percentage and has stolen three bases in four attempts while helping turn three double plays defensively.
Graduate transfer Rigoberto Hernandez is hitting .346 with two home runs and a team-best 17 total bases. Colt Brown is batting .333 with five doubles and 10 hits, and Steven Spalitta has reached base at a .406 clip while sharing the team lead with seven runs scored.
On the mound, right-hander Sawyer Pruitt (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is slated to start Tuesday's opener. Pruitt has allowed just one run - none earned - over 8.2 innings this season, striking out 10. Wednesday's starter will be announced.
Kansas State (6-1) enters the week off a 2-1 showing at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series in Arlington, Texas, earning wins over Nebraska and Michigan. The Wildcats are off to their best start since 2010.
Nine K-State players recorded a hit over the weekend, highlighted by a five-hit performance from newcomer Carlos Vasquez, who also hit two home runs. Dee Kennedy added a pair of homers as the Wildcats' pitching staff posted a 4.00 ERA across 27 innings in Arlington.
Right-hander Tanner Duke (0-0, 13.50 ERA) is expected to start Tuesday for Kansas State. Wednesday's starter has not been announced.
