Mark Collins is greeted by teammates after his third-inning home run helped Louisiana defeat Kansas State, 1-0, on Tuesday at Russo Park

Pruitt, Collins Lead Louisiana Past K-State, 1-0

Pruitt, two relievers combine on three-hit shutout; series concludes on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

LAFAYETTE – Freshman Sawyer Pruitt combined with two relievers on a three-hit shutout, and Mark Collins supplied the game's only run with a two-out solo home run in the third inning as Louisiana defeated Kansas State, 1-0, on Tuesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

Louisiana (6-2) won its sixth straight game and recorded its second shutout during the streak. It marked the Ragin' Cajuns' first 1-0 victory since April 13, 2024, against Marshall.

Pruitt (2-0), making his second career start, struck out nine in 6.0 innings. He scattered three hits and worked around traffic in the middle innings before Hayden Pearson and Garret Carter handled the final three innings to secure the win.

Facing a Kansas State (6-2) lineup that entered the game batting .315 as a team, Pruitt retired the side in order in the first. Dee Kennedy led off the second with a single but was thrown out attempting to steal second. Pruitt then struck out AJ Evasco and induced a groundout from Grant Gallagher to end the inning.

Kansas State threatened again in the fifth when Gallagher singled and advanced to second on Micah Kendrick's sacrifice bunt. Pruitt responded with consecutive strikeouts to escape the inning, then fanned the first two batters he faced in the sixth before eventually exiting.

Louisiana managed early singles from Maddox Mandino in the first and Steven Spalitta in the second, but did not break through until the third. After a groundout and strikeout, Collins — a former Opelousas Catholic standout — drove the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence for his first collegiate home run and a 1-0 lead.

Kansas State starter Tanner Duke (0-1) allowed one run on three hits over 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. Duke and reliever Robert Fortenberry retired the final 16 Louisiana batters.

Pearson pitched two hitless innings with two strikeouts, and Carter worked a scoreless ninth for his second save.

The two-game midweek series concludes Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game will stream on ESPN+ and can be heard locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
