Cajuns Finish Eighth Overall at Border Olympics

Potgieter earns third-place finish; Schmitt posts ace on par-3 No. 14
LAREDO, Texas – Senior Malan Potgieter posted his second straight even-par 71 in Tuesday's final round and finished tied for third individually to lead UL's Ragin' Cajun golf team in the spring-opening 75th Border Olympics tournament.
Potgieter followed his opening four-under 67 with the two even-par rounds over the 7,257-yard par-71 Laredo Country Club course and finished at four-under 205 for his fourth top-three finish and his fifth top-five in six tournaments this season. The Kirkwood, South Africa, native entered Tuesday's final round tied for third, and has finished out of the top five only once this season.
Junior teammate Carter Schmitt finished with UL's second-best score for the tournament at four-over 217, and had the shot of the day Tuesday when he holed out for an ace on the 168-yard par-three 14th hole for the tournament's only hole-in-one. Schmitt played two-under over his final 10 holes Tuesday and finished 22nd individually.
The Cajuns, who won last year's Border Olympics title for their first team win since 2023, posted their second straight four-over 288 score and finished eighth in the 13-team field at 290-288-288—866 (+14). Tournament host Houston, which finished tied for second behind the Cajuns last year, carded its second straight one-under 283 score in Tuesday's third and final round and won the team title at two-under 850. Tarleton State and North Texas tied for second, two strokes back at even-par 852.
Houston's Hudson Weibel posted Tuesday's low round, a four-under 67, and took the individual title with a 70-68-67—205 (-8) score. He finished two strokes ahead of Jose Ramirez of Wichita State (73-63-71—207, -6) and four strokes ahead of Potgieter.
Potgieter, the Cajuns' fall-season stroke leader with a 68.87 stroke average and ranked 61st in the national Scoreboard rankings, finished tied for sixth in last week's Africa Amateur Championships played in his native South Africa before opening his spring collegiate season Monday and Tuesday. He was 3-over to start his Tuesday round before rallying with six birdies over his final 14 holes, giving him 14 birdies for the tournament.
Senior Jean Louis du Plessis had a one-over 72 Tuesday and finished 46th at 222 (+9), while freshman James Holtsclaw finished at 11-over 224 and freshman Nathan Schuldt tied for 57th at 13-over 226. Sophomore Jay Brooks, playing as an individual, tied with Schuldt for 57th at 226.
UL will play its second spring tournament next Monday-Wednesday when the Ragin' Cajuns serve as host team for the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate at the Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. The Cajuns will host their own 41st annual Louisiana Classics March 9-10 at Oakbourne Country Club.
