Holtsclaw shoots career-low 3-under-69 as Cajuns finish six shots off lead
HENDERSON, Nev. – Paced by a college-career low round 69 from redshirt freshman James Holtsclaw and two other top 20 individual finishes, UL's Ragin' Cajun golf team carded a one-over 289 score Monday and stands in fourth place after the first round of the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate Tournament.
The Cajuns stand six strokes behind front-running Boise State (283, -5) and one stroke back of Sun Belt Conference rival Texas State in third place (288) going into Tuesday's second round at the 7,261-yard par-72 Reflection Bay Golf Club. A final 18 holes will be played Wednesday.
Holtsclaw, a native of Shreveport and ranked as Louisiana's top prep golfer coming out of his senior year at C. E. Byrd High School in 2024, birdied his opening par-four 10th hole and went on to post six birdies. He went into his final hole one-under and promptly eagled the 561-yard par-five ninth hole to move into a four-way tie for second place individually behind only Ben Loveard of Texas State, who had the day's low round with a four-under 68.
The Cajuns' two seniors, Malan Potgieter and Jean Louis du Plessis, finished tied for 20th in the individual results, both shooting even-par 72. Potgieter birdied three of his final four holes in rallying back from a four-hole, four-over stretch, while du Plessis matched three birdies and three bogeys.
Junior Carter Schmitt had a four-over 76 for 43rd individually and freshman Drew Sliman finished 59th after the first round with a 79. Freshman Nathan Schuldt and sophomore Jay Brooks, playing as individuals, shot 77 and 80 individually with Brooks also recording an eagle on the par-five ninth, and stand 52nd and 63rd individually.
Northern Illinois is one shot back of Boise State at four-under 284 in the team race, while Jacksonville State and Sun Belt rival Coastal Carolina are two and three strokes back of the Cajuns entering Tuesday's second round. Cole Rueck of Boise State, Sakke Siltala of Texas State and Mason Haley of Kansas City are tied with Holtsclaw for second place after a first round that included 19 sub-par scores.
