Second-Half Shooting Leads ODU Past Louisiana, 83-72

Louisiana to face A-State, Texas State to close out home schedule
NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion used torrid second-half shooting and all five starters scored in double figures as the Monarchs defeated Louisiana 83-72 Monday evening at Chartway Arena in a rescheduled game from January 24th.
ODU (10-18, 6-9 SBC) made 16 of their 23 second-half field goal attempts and 15 of 17 free throws en route to 49 second-half points.
Sophomore guard Jaxon Olvera scored a season-high 23 points on 10-for-20 shooting for Louisiana (9-18, 6-8 SBC), who trailed 34-33 at the break. Dorian Finister added 17 points, while De'Vion Lavergne added 16.
Lavergne also led the team with seven rebounds and three assists, helping the Cajuns to a 35-29 advantage on the boards, including 14 offensive rebounds, which led to a 12-4 Louisiana advantage in second-chance points.
Old Dominion's five starters accounted for all but two points of the Monarchs' total, led by Jordan Battle with a game-high 27 points. Ketron Shaw (16), Caelum Swanton-Rodger (15), Zacch Wiggins (12) and LJ Thomas (10) also reached double figures in the game for the Monarchs.
Olvera scored nine of his points in the first 5:33 to lead the Cajuns to an early 17-8 lead, but Battle and Thomas scored the game's next nine points to tie the game as the Cajuns went nearly four minutes without a field goal.
ODU claimed the lead for the rest of the half, with Karris Bilal's three-point play getting Louisiana within one, 34-33 at the half.
A Bilal 3-pointer four minutes into the second half tied the game at 41 and Olvera hit back-to-back buckets to give Louisiana their final lead, 51-50, at the 11:50 mark of the second half. A three-point play by Finister got the Cajuns within two with 8:51 remaining, but ODU scored 10 of the next 13 points, and the Cajuns never got closer than five the rest of the way.
For the contest, Old Dominion shot 56.9 percent (29-for-51) and hit 21 of 26 free throws. The Cajuns, meanwhile, were held to 40 percent (24-for-60), including 6-for-17 from beyond the arc.
Louisiana will be back in the Cajundome for its final two home games of the season. The Ragin' Cajuns will face Arkansas State for the first meeting of the season on Thursday at 7 p.m., before a rematch with Texas State on Saturday at noon.
