Ragin' Cajuns close out home schedule on Saturday against Texas State

LAFAYETTE – Arkansas State guard Chandler Jackson scored 21 of his 31 points in the first half, and the Red Wolves took advantage of cold second-half shooting to pull away from the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 79-62 Thursday night at the Cajundome.

Jackson scored on 13 of his 16 shot attempts, including 9-for-10 before intermission as Arkansas State (17-11, 8-7 SBC) came from behind to take a 36-33 lead at the break. Jalen Hampton added 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Red Wolves dominated the Cajuns, 47-26, on the boards and held the Cajuns to just 28.9 percent shooting after intermission.

Dorian Finister scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to join Jaxon Olvera in leading the Cajuns with 18 points apiece, while De'Vion Lavergne added 13. The Cajuns enjoyed their fewest amount of turnovers all season with just three miscues, while Louisiana forced 18 Red Wolves turnovers, helping the Cajuns (9-19, 6-9 SBC) to a 15-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

After A-State scored the game's first basket, Louisiana reeled off nine straight points and went on a 15-2 run to jump out front, 15-4, five minutes into the contest. The Red Wolves went over six minutes without a field goal during that stretch as the Cajuns' defense forced five early turnovers.

A triple from Olvera and a jumper by Lavergne increased the Cajuns' lead to 20-9 before Jackson scored 19 of the Red Wolves' next 27 points, enabling A-State to crawl even at the 3:52 mark before taking a 36-33 halftime lead.

Louisiana continued to battle, drawing even at 44 apiece following an Olvera layup, but the Cajuns missed 10 of their next 13 field goal attempts, and the Red Wolves dominated on the boards, 29-13 in the second half.

For the game, Arkansas State shot 58.3 percent (28-for-48) to help overcome their turnover issues, while the Cajuns were just 24 of 74 for 32.4 percent. Karris Bilal led the Cajuns with six rebounds, five of them on the offensive end, as Louisiana wound up with 14 offensive rebounds on the night.

The Cajuns will play their final home game Saturday against Texas State at noon at the Cajundome and will honor seniors Milan Mejia and Dariyus Woodson before the contest. The Cajuns will wrap up the regular season with road games at Troy and Arkansas State.
