Conclusion of second round to begin at 7:45 a.m.; final round to follow
DAYTON, Ohio – UL's golf team struggled in Monday's first two rounds of the Moraine Intercollegiate, and stands in 16th place as a team going into Tuesday's final round in the event hosted by Miami (Ohio).
The Ragin' Cajuns shot their highest round of the fall season, a 29-over-par 313, in Monday's first of two rounds over the difficult Moraine Country Club layout. They improved by 18 shots in the afternoon round, but their two-round total of 40-over 608 has them trailing the field with one round left over the 7,270-yard par-71 Moraine layout.
UL, making its first appearance in the event, didn't get untracked until Monday's final nine holes. The Cajuns had only six birdies as a team through the first 27 holes, but the five-player lineup had 10 birdies on those final nine holes, led by sophomore James Holtsclaw. The Shreveport product birdied four of his final eight holes in the afternoon round on the way to a one-under 70 for UL's best round of the day.
Holtsclaw is at five-over 147 through two rounds and is tied for 41st in the field.
Sophomore Drew Sliman led UL in the opening round with a four-over 75, and is tied for 64th at 75-76—151 entering the final round.
Virginia Commonwealth leads the event at five-under-par 563 and was the only unit in the 16-team field to break par on the first day. Sam Houston is in second place at one-over 569, while Xavier is third at 572 and Penn State fourth at 573. Four teams did not finish their second round Monday and will complete that round Tuesday morning before the third and final round goes off with an 8:45 a.m. (EDT) shotgun start.
UL's other scores included freshman Jack Carter at 79-74—153 (+11), freshman Skuli Agustsson at 82-75—157 (+15) and senior Jay Brooks at 87-81—168 (+26). Pairings and live scoring for Tuesday's final round are available online at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
