Two-day, 54-hole tournament begins Monday

DAYTON, Ohio – UL's golf team will look for a return to the success of its season-opening weekend here Monday and Tuesday when the Ragin' Cajuns join 14 other teams in the Moraine Intercollegiate hosted by Miami (Ohio).

The Cajuns will be making their first-ever appearance in the two-day, 54-hole tournament to be held at the historic and difficult Moraine Country Club. The 7,270-yard par-72 layout, opened in 1930, has a slope rating of 141 and is on Golf Digest's top 10 courses in Ohio and on its original America's 200 Toughest Courses.

Even though his team has never appeared in the Moraine event, coach Theo Sliman has played the course.

"It's a beautiful place, very undulated," Sliman said. "It typically plays firm and fast and the rough is pretty penal. It's a good opportunity for our team to test itself and to see some teams we typically don't get to see down south."

The field includes Dayton, UConn, Virginia Commonwealth, Penn State, Rhode Island, Xavier, Wright State, Jacksonville State, George Mason, Sam Houston, Minnesota, UAB and Ohio along with the Cajuns and the host Miami (Ohio) squad. The only team in the field that UL has faced in a tournament is Jacksonville State, with both teams playing in the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek in Choudrant two weeks ago.

UL finished three shots from winning the championship in its season-opening Sandestin Collegiate Classic in September, shooting one-over 841 at The Raven in Miramar Beach, Fla. But since then, the Cajuns finished ninth of 12 teams at the Chicago Highlands event before finishing 11th of 14 at the Argent tournament.

"We just had way too many double- and triple-bogeys in those tournaments," Sliman said. "We can't accept that as a team. You can't make multiple doubles and triples if we expect to compete, and that's what we've been focusing on over the last week."

The Cajuns will be led by first-year freshman Skuli Agustsson, who opened his collegiate career with a one-under 75-68-72-215 score to finish in the top 20 individually at the Argent event. The native of Akureyri, Iceland, had six birdies in the middle round and 16 pars in the final round, coming up one hole short of a bogey-free round on his final hole.

"Having a freshman playing at number one, I'm excited to see how he responds to it," said Sliman, whose five-man lineup for the Moraine tournament includes two freshmen and two sophomores. "He had a very solid tournament in his debut, and the other young players have shown some good signs. We just have to be more consistent, and that's going to be a challenge on this course."

Agustsson (71.67 stroke average) will be joined in the lineup by fellow freshman Jack Carter (73.17) of Baton Rouge, sophomores James Holtsclaw (72.89) of Shreveport and Drew Sliman (73.67) of Lafayette, and fourth-year senior Jay Brooks (80.33) of Boca Raton, Fla. Holtsclaw is second on the team in stroke average, the same spot he held in UL's 2026 spring season, while Sliman was the next-highest Cajun in the Argent tournament with a 75-74-73—222 (+6) total.

After a Sunday afternoon practice round, teams will play two 18-hole rounds Monday beginning with an 8:45 a.m. (EDT) shotgun start, before a final 18 holes at the same time Tuesday. Pairings and live scoring are available online at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
