Louisiana wraps up fall portion of schedule beginning Monday at The Clerico
DAYTON, Ohio – The second and final day of the Moraine Intercollegiate tournament Tuesday was just as tough for UL's golf team as Monday's first two rounds.
The Ragin' Cajuns managed only a 22-over-par 306 score, the second-highest score of the day in the field, and finished the three-round event with a 66-over-par 914 total in their fourth of five fall events.
The Cajuns got a solid two-over-par 73 round from freshman Jack Carter of Baton Rouge, but had to count scores of 5-over, 7-over and 8-over in their lineup in the final round.
"It's very disappointing and extremely frustrating," said Cajun coach Theo Sliman. "There's something among this team right now. We've got to look at the approach that we're doing and dig deep, and that's my responsibility. But I know this sport, and I know how quickly confidence can shift. We've just got to build that confidence back."
The Cajuns, who finished only three strokes out of winning the team title at the fall-opening Sandestin Collegiate Classic, did not have a top-50 individual finisher for the first time this season. Carter and sophomore James Holtsclaw of Shreveport finished tied for 60th as UL's top finishers, both at 13-over 226 over the difficult 7,270-yard, par-72 Moraine Country Club course that's ranked among America's 200 toughest courses by Golf Digest.
"We've played on courses like this before," Sliman said. "It was tough on these guys, but I think we have some tough young men that just aren't showing what they're capable of doing right now."
Carter had opened at 79-74 and had his low round of the event, birdieing his first hole and scattering three bogeys. Holtsclaw was UL's leader and was tied for 41st individually after 77-70 rounds on Monday.
UL's second-best score Tuesday came from senior Jay Brooks of Boca Raton, Fla., who had struggled with 87-81 scores on Monday but had four birdies Tuesday in a five-over 76 round. Sophomore Drew Sliman had a 78 Tuesday and finished at 16-over 229 and freshman Skuli Agustsson of Akureyri, Iceland, struggled to an 82 Tuesday and finished at 26-over 239.
Virginia Commonwealth won the team title by two strokes with a seven-over 859 score despite a final-round 12-over 296 score, finishing two shots ahead of Minnesota (861, +9) and three ahead of Wisconsin (862, +10). Those two teams shot three-under 281 in Tuesday's final round.
UL will return to action next Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 19-20, in their final tournament of the fall season when they take part in The Clerico, being played this year at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, Okla., and hosted by Oral Roberts.
