Ragin' Cajuns part of 17-team field in opening event of 2025-26
CHOUDRANT – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team officially tees off its 2025-26 season on Sunday when it opens play at Louisiana Tech's Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club.
The three-day, 54-hole event begins with 18 holes of stroke play beginning at 7:30 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday. The final 18 holes on the par-72, 7,105-yard course will be played on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. Live scoring for the event will be available at Scoreboard.Clippd.com.
Louisiana will be joined in the 17-team field by host Louisiana Tech. Also entered in the season-opening event are Houston, Jacksonville State, Lamar, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Nicholls, North Texas, Rice, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, UAB, ULM, UTSA and Western Kentucky.
"We are excited and eager to start the 2025-26 campaign," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We always enjoy opening our season at the Argent Financial Classic here in Louisiana. Coach Matt Terry and the staff at Squire Creek run a first-class event — one in which we've had some nice success as a team in past years."
The Ragin' Cajuns, paired with Lamar and South Alabama in the opening round, get things started from the No. 10 tee at 7:30 a.m., when freshman James Holtsclaw makes his collegiate debut. The Shreveport native will be followed by Lafayette freshman Ben Blanco (7:40 p.m.), University of Florida transfer Jay Brooks (7:50 a.m.), Carter Schmitt (8 a.m.) and returning All-Sun Belt Conference performer Malan Potgieter (8:10 a.m.)
Jean Louis du Plessis, joining Potgieter and Schmitt as returning starters from the 2024-25 team, will compete individually and will tee off at 8:30 a.m.
"We're also anxious to see how our new additions adjust to the competition of collegiate golf," Sliman added. "We have a very competitive team. Discipline and patience – coupled with a lot of hard work – will be key ingredients to our success this season.
"It's a long season, with both the fall and spring weighing equally in the year-long race. We're going to take it one week at a time, and a gritty attitude is exactly what we want to see from this very talented group."
