The Cajuns kick off the season at home in the first of two exhibition contests
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana soccer team is back in action in the first of two preseason exhibition contests as they take on Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex in Lafayette.
Last season, the third under head coach Chris McBride, the Cajuns got off to a hot start. The team started the season 4-0-3, matching the program's longest unbeaten streak while setting the record for the longest streak to start the season.
Louisiana returns a strong core along the backline. Natalie Mayes returns to the net, where she set the program single season record for shutouts last year with seven. In front of her, the Cajuns bring back Aila Swinton, Lily Parker, Sydney Byrnes, and Chloe Mueller, who combined for 4,465 minutes last season. Adding to the continuity are Sisley Stephens and Sienna Hurrel,l who combined for over 2,000 minutes last year for a Cajun team that allowed just 1.10 goals per game. Louisiana also looks for contributions to the defense from Cincinnati transfer Kendal Green.
Adeline Nemeth returns after scoring a team-leading four goals a season ago as a freshman. She'll be joined on the front line by returners Briana Henry and Tori Bockstadter, along with veteran newcomers, Salma Elhaimer, Raegan Latiolais, Olivia Harding, and Maiya Clark.Â
Louisiana will play two exhibitions, with the second coming on Sunday, August 10, at Southeastern, before the season officially kicks off at home against Lamar on August 14. The Cajuns will play eight home contests, including Sun Belt Conference contests against Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Southern Miss, Old Dominion, and ULM.
The Cajuns are 1-3-1 in the regular season against SFA. Louisiana won the last meeting by a score of 1-0 with Stephens scoring the lone goal just 19 seconds into the second half.
The fourth season of the Chris McBride kicks off at 7 p.m. on August 14 against Lamar at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex in Lafayette.
