Raegan Latiolais celebrates scoring a goal against Lamar

Cajun Offense Comes Out on Fire in Season Opening 4-1 Win Over Lamar

8/14/2025 10:50:00 PM | Soccer

It was the team’s second-most goals in a season opener and second-largest margin of victory in program history

LAFAYETTE - Shaking off an early deficit, the Louisiana soccer team cruised to a 4-1 win over Lamar in the team's season opener on Thursday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex. It was the second-most goals scored in a season opener and the second-largest margin of victory to start a season in school history, only trailing a 10-0 win over Jackson State to open the 2003 season.

"To come in and score some goals the first night is really good," said head coach Chris McBride. "When you come into preseason, you're working on how you're going to defend and how you're going to attack. To only allow one from a player's great work, make one mistake, and then be able to put four in the back of the net, I think it really complements our athletes and what they've focused on and dedicated themselves to this preseason."

Louisiana thought they had the first goal of the year in just the seventh minute of action, but Raegan Latiolais' shot hit the crossbar. The Ragin' Cajuns continued to push the pace, but it was the visiting Cardinals who scored first in the 24th minute.

"Resiliency is one of the biggest things that we've worked on as a team," said Salma Elhaimer, who scored and added an assist in her Cajun debut. "One of the things we focused on is that mistakes are going to happen, and the only thing you can do is let it go and move forward. We did exactly what we're supposed to do in response."

The Cajuns did respond. In the 33rd minute, they finally found a way to put the ball in the back of the net when Adeline Nemeth headed home a cross from Amelia Majtczak. About a minute later, Carson Glenn was taken down in the box to draw a penalty kick. Glenn would score on the ensuing PK, the team's first attempt since 2022, to make it 2-1.

Out of the locker room, Louisiana needed just over two minutes to score again. Elhaimer had a long pass from the left side that found an open Latiolais, who smashed it home with her right foot to make it 3-1. Elhaimer capped the scoring with a goal off a corner from Majtczak in the 54th minute.

"After the fall season, we really spent the spring practicing finishing at the net," said Majtczak, who matched her assist total from last season. "I feel like we started scoring and built our confidence in the box and play that was a huge part in tonight."

Louisiana improved to 3-0-1 in season openers under McBride and is now 5-0-1 in its last six overall. It was the team's first win over Lamar in five tries, dating back to 2016, matching that final score. Last season, the Cajuns scored more than two goals in a game just twice.

The Ragin' Cajuns hit the road to face Louisiana Tech next Thursday, August 21, in Ruston with a 7 p.m. start.
