Strong Second Day Sets Louisiana Up for Title Contention at SBC Championships

Louisiana will be well represented in tomorrow's final events

HARRISONBURG, Virginia - The Louisiana track and field team placed three more on the podium and set themselves up for a championship run after day two of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships in Harrisonburg, Virginia. After two days, the women are fourth with 39 points while the men are fifth with 27 points.

The day started with Federico Bovo and Nelvin Appiah closing the decathlon with points. Bovo finished with a score of 6862, placing third with the sixth-most points in school history. Thanks to a big opening day, Appiah finished fifth at 6597.

Teodor Borgius found himself on the podium after posting a big personal best in the pole vault at 17-3.75/5.28. Prayer Jones also scored for the men, finishing fourth in the shot put at 56-10.25/17.33.

Reem Tammam lept her way to the podium in the long jump, taking third place at 19-11.75/6.09. Laila Guy helped the women keep pace by finishing sixth in the shot put with a best throw of 46-2.5/14.08. The Cajuns closed the night with two scorers in the 3000S. Skylar Delgado was seventh at 11:07.86 while Juliana Courville was eighth at 11:09.69.

In qualifying rounds, Louisiana was well represented. Kay-Lagay Clarke started the show with the fourth-best time in the 100m hurdles at 13.54. Alexandra Johnson was fast enough to qualify for the finals in the 800m at 2:12.47. In the 400m, Quincy Simon was the final qualifier with a time of 55.68 and in the 100m, Amairi Ashford was fourth with a time of 11.44.

On the men's side, Kobe Mendez and Michael Frazier III each punched their spot in tomorrow's 110m hurdle finals. Mendez was fourth at 13.88 while Frazier was 14.27, both personal bests. Joe Patterson will go for the sweep of the SBC 800m titles after running a qualifying time of 1:51.95. Lawson Jacobs once again stole the show, qualifying first in the 400m with a blazing fast time of 46.46. Hunter Ullrich also qualified with a time of 48.04, good enough for fourth. In the final qualifying event, Mark Daley punched his ticket to the finals of the 100m with a time of 10.45.

The final day of the SBC Championships begins at 11 a.m. with the men's triple jump and women's discus. Track events begin at 3 p.m. with the women's 4x100m relay.
