Louisiana looks to sweep the men’s titles and improve on last year’s second-place finish on the women’s side

HARRISONBURG, Virginia - Three days in May is all that stands between the Louisiana track and field team and its ultimate goal, a Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championship, which begins on Thursday at Sentara Park in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Louisiana looks to factor in both the men's and women's sides. The men are the reigning indoor champions, while the women finished second at last year's outdoors by just four points.

The Ragin' Cajuns have already had a historic spring with 35 entries into the record book, including five program records. Joe Patterson's pair of records in the men's 800 (1:47.89) and the 1500 (3:46.29) lead the way. Alexandra Johnson continues to lower her own record in the women's 800 all the way down to 2:06.44. Isabelle Russell shattered the women's 5000 record, bringing it down to 16:43.69. Lily Murray continued this spring to be one of the best throwers in school history with a record hammer throw of 191-9.

Louisiana leads the conference in five events heading into the weekend. Kimola Hines holds down the league's best throw in the discus at 172-2/52.49m. Freshman sensation Lawson Jacobs looks to repeat as 400m champion and leads the SBC with a time of 45.91, the second-fastest in school history. Patterson's time in the 800 is the top spot in the conference, along with the UL record book. Louisiana also leads in both the men's 4x100m and 4x400m relays, holding down a lead of over two seconds in the 4x400.

In total, Louisiana has combined for 26 of the top-5 scores in the league. Of those scores, 14 belong to the men and 12 to the women. Louisiana's men look to dominate in sprints just like they did at the indoor championships, where they won the 200m, 400m, and 800m. They head into the week leading in the 400m and 800m with top five scores in the 100m, 200m, and 1500m.

The event begins on Thursday with multi-events beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the decathlon 100m. Field events open up with the women's hammer at 11 a.m. while running events start at 5:30 p.m. with the women's 1500m prelims.
