Potgieter's Ace Fuels Opening Round at NCAA Tallahassee Regional

Junior sits three strokes overall lead; tied for seventh after 18 holes
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Louisiana's Malan Potgieter posted a 3-under-par 69, highlighted by the first hole-in-one of his collegiate career, and finished tied for seventh overall during the opening day of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on Monday at Seminole Legacy Golf Club.

Potgieter, who finished three strokes off the overall lead held by Florida State's Luke Clanton, will continue his quest to qualify for the NCAA Men's Golf Championships on Tuesday when he tees off at 9:04 a.m. CT, from the No. 1 tee. Potgieter, one of five individuals competing in the 75-player field, will be paired with Davidson's Will Tharin and Taylor Bell of Florida A&M.

Potgieter, making his second appearance in the NCAA Regionals and first as an individual, opened the day with back-to-back birdies at No. 3 and No. 4, before adding his third birdie of the round at No. 7 to make the turn at 3-under-33.

The junior posted a bogey to begin the back nine and fell to 1-under after a bogey on the par-5, No. 14. Potgieter would respond on the following hole – the par-3, 150-yard, No. 15 with his first career ace, and would cap off his round with a birdie on the par-4, No. 18.

Host Florida State led the 14-team field at 14-under-274 with Notre Dame (281), Ole Miss (282), New Mexico (285) and Augusta (285) rounding out the top five.
