Ragin' Cajuns wrap up nine-game homestand on Tuesday against UTRGV
Carson Laws pitched the final 3.1 innings with six strikeouts as Texas State (15-16, 6-6 SBC) claimed its first series win over Louisiana (16-18, 7-5 SBC) since 2022. Gingrich and Alan Shibley had two hits each for the Bobcats.
Louisiana's Carson Hepworth hit the first pitch from Texas State starter Shane Connell for a solo home run and an early 1-0 lead. Hepworth, Caleb Stelly and Owen Galt finished 2-for-4 at the plate with Jose Torres going 2-for-3 with a double.
The Bobcats scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead after Ian Collier was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before Shibley reached on an error. Austin Munguia followed with an RBI single to drive in Collier before Shibley scored on a double play.
Shibley, who was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, gave Texas State a 3-1 lead in the sixth when his single off Louisiana starter JR Tollett scored Chase Mora.
Louisiana got its first two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth when Lee Amedee drew a walk and Galt singled up the middle off Texas State starter Shane Connell. Torres then followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to drive in Amedee before Galt scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats would break the tie in the ninth after Shibley drew a leadoff walk from Louisiana reliever Matthew Holzhammer (1-4). Munguia would move Shibley over on a sacrifice bunt before Gingrich followed two batters later when his 3-and-2 pitch was hit over Stelly's head in right-center field.
Laws (2-0), who was one of four pitchers used by Texas State in the sixth inning, got out a jam by getting an infield pop-up with the go-ahead run at third.
The right-hander allowed both hits to Stelly – a two-out double in the seventh before a two-out single in the eighth. Laws allowed a leadoff walk to Connor Cuff in the ninth but got a pair of strikeouts in the frame to seal the win.
Tollett recorded his third consecutive quality start on the mound for Louisiana after scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs in 6.0 innings. Holzhammer retired the first six batters he faced until walking Shibley to lead off the ninth.
Louisiana will close out its nine-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts UTRGV at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
