Late Errors Costly For Cajuns Against UTRGV, 9-7

Ragin' Cajuns open seven-game roadtrip on Wednesday at Louisiana Tech
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns fought out of a 5-1 deficit with a five-run third inning and held a one-run lead after six innings, but a pair of errors in a three-run seventh inning helped UTRGV rally for a 9-7 win on Tuesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Louisiana (16-19) returns to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it travels north to face Louisiana Tech in the start of a seven-game roadtrip. The Ragin' Cajuns will face ULM in a Sun Belt Conference series beginning Friday before traveling to face Old Dominion (April 17-19) in a three-game series in Norfolk, Va.
UTRGV (22-10), which capped a 10-game road trip, scored three times in the first inning beginning with Issac Lopez's home run to left on the first pitch of the game. The Vaqueros added an RBI double by Steven Lancia and RBI groundout by Thomas Williams for a 3-0 lead.
A bases-loaded walk in the second inning to Easton Moomow gave UTRGV a 4-0 lead before scored an unearned run in the second on Owen Galt's RBI single. The Ragin' Cajuns trailed 5-1 in the third after Williams led off the frame with a solo homer to right before scoring five runs to take their first lead of the game.
Louisiana sent 11 men to the plate in the inning with five straight batters reaching base with one out. Conor Higgs singled up the middle before Caleb Stelly reached on an infield single to load the bases off UTRGV reliever Kike Cienfuegos. Lee Amedee reached on an infield single to plate Jose Torres before a bases-loaded walk to Carson Hepworth scored Higgs.
Maddox Mandino hit an RBI single to score Stelly before Amedee scored on a fielder's choice by Galt and Torres would draw a bases-loaded walk for a 6-5 lead.
An error in the fifth inning by the Ragin' Cajuns would allow Lancia to score and tie the game at 6-6 before Higgs' double drove in Torres for a 7-6 lead.
The Vaqueros capitalized on a pair of errors in the seventh and scored three times without the benefit of a hit to take the lead. Hank Warren led off the inning when his ball hit back to the mound was bobbled for an error before a walk to Ryan Galvan put runners on first and second. Cameron Carter was then hit by a pitch to load the bases before Lopez reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game, but a throwing error allowed Galvan to score to give UTRGV an 8-7 lead.
The Vaqueros added their third run of the inning when Lancia hit an infield single that allowed Lopez to score.
Anthony Tejada (2-0), the fourth of seven pitchers used by UTRGV, earned the victory after fanning a pair of batters and scattering a pair of hits in 2.0 innings of work. Steven Oliva pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save of the year.
Wil Taylor (0-1) took the loss for Louisiana after allowing three runs (one earned) in 0.1 innings. Riley Marcotte pitched the final 2.2 innings for the Ragin' Cajuns, scattering a pair of hits with three strikeouts.
Higgs went 3-for-5 to lead Louisiana at the plate. Mandino, Galt and Torres had two hits apiece for the Ragin' Cajuns with Galt extending his hit streak to 10 games.
