Ortego Tied For First; Cajuns Tied For Fourth at SBC Championships

Top four teams advance to match play; final round to tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday

MADISON, Miss. – Senior Eli Ortego recorded a 3-under-par 69 to move into a first-place tie after 36 holes and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team posted a team score of 3-over-291 to finish in a tie for fourth place after the second day of the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championships on Tuesday at Annandale Golf Club.
 
The final round of stroke play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The final round will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live scoring available at ScoreBoard.Clippd.com.
 
Louisiana finished the first 36 holes of the 54-hole stroke play at 1-over-577 and tied with Troy heading into the final round. First-round leader Arkansas State maintained its lead in the 14-team field at 566 with Coastal Carolina (570), Georgia Southern (572), Louisiana and Troy rounding out the top five.
 
The top four teams in stroke play will advance to Thursday's Match Play with semifinals scheduled for 7:30 a.m. with the Match Play Championship to follow. The winner of Match Play will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
 
Ortego recorded a bogey-free round on the par-72, 7,157-yard course to move into a tie with Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt and Jack Maxey at 5-under-139. The Lafayette native recorded birdies at both No. 13 and 18 to make the turn at 2-under-34 before recording his third birdie of the day at the par-5, 556-yard No. 7 and notching his 18th career round in the 60's.
 
Malan Potgieter recorded a 1-under-par 71 in the second round for Louisiana and was tied for fourth in the field at 3-under-141. The junior posted a pair of birdies on the back nine and made the turn at 1-under-35 before collecting his third birdie of the round on the par-5, 522-yard No. 5.
 
Jean Louis du Plessis fired a 4-over-76 in the second round and finished at 4-over-148 for the Ragin' Cajuns with Carter Schmitt posting a second consecutive round of 3-over-75 to finish at 6-over-150. Kyle Bennett rounded out the Louisiana lineup with a 5-over-77 to finish at 7-over-151 after the second round.
