Tollett, Marcotte combine on six-hit shutout; Cajuns host Grambling, Nicholls in midweek action
NORFOLK, Va. – JR Tollett and Riley Marcotte combined on a six-hit shutout while Maddox Mandino, Luke Yuhasz and Jose Torres had three hits each as Louisiana collected a season-high 16 hits and claimed a 10-0 win in eight innings over Old Dominion in the finale of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series on Saturday at Harbor Park.
Drew Markle drove in three runs, including a pair of perfectly executed squeeze bunt, as Louisiana (19-23, 10-8 SBC) claimed its second weekend series over ODU (13-24, 8-10 SBC) in as many seasons.
Tollett (4-3) held ODU in check in recording his fifth consecutive quality start. The right-hander scattered six hits and struck out eight with no walks over 6.2 innings. Tollett limited the Monarchs to a pair of two-out hits over the first 4.0 innings.
Louisiana would give the pitching staff all the runs it would need, beginning with Torres' solo homer off ODU starter Blake Morgan (3-3) to lead off the fifth inning. The Ragin' Cajuns add their second run of the inning when Mandino would follow with a bunt single up the first-base line, move to second on a sacrifice bunt and score on Yuhasz's double to left.
The Ragin' Cajuns increased their lead to 6-0 with a four-run sixth inning as Owen Galt drove in Lee Amedee with an RBI single before scoring two batters later when Mandino singled up the middle off Monarch reliever Alex Hunt.
Markle then followed with a bunt up the third-base line, scoring Torres from third with Mandino following as he slid under the tag of ODU catcher Evan Holman.
Louisiana sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth with Torres and Markle each recording RBI singles with Mandino scoring on Conor Higgs' fielder's choice and Amedee drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Yuhasz and Torres each went 3-for-4 for Louisiana, which had at least one hit from all nine starters in the line, with Mandino going 3-for-5. Mandino and Torres each scored three runs for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Marcotte tossed 1.1 innings of hitless relief to help Louisiana post its third shutout of the season and second in Sun Belt Conference play.
Morgan scattered 10 hits and surrendered five runs in 5.1 innings for ODU. Efrain Morales had two hits to lead the Monarchs.
Louisiana will return home for its final five-game week beginning on Tuesday (April 22) against Grambling at 6 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns will face Nicholls in their final midweek game of the season on Wednesday (April 23) before hosting Georgia Southern in a three-game series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
