Louisiana Closes Out Midweek Schedule With 6-2 Win Over Nicholls

Theut earns first mound victory in nearly two years; Cajuns to host Georgia Southern beginning Friday
LAFAYETTE – Jose Torres' base-clearing double in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 contest and Dylan Theut pitched 4.0 solid innings in relief to earn his first victory in nearly two years as Louisiana earned a 6-2 victory over Nicholls on Wednesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Conor Higgs drove in a pair of runs, including his 13th home run of the season with a solo blast in the second inning, as Louisiana (20-23) recorded eight hits and scored in three straight innings after Nicholls (15-26) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
Nicholls trailed 1-0 until Logan Mock's RBI single off in the third inning off Louisiana starter Tate Hess scored AJ Cappell. The Colonels broke the deadlock in the fifth after Karson Irvin drew a one-out walk and scored when Jaden Collura laced a two-out, RBI double into the right-field corner to chase Ragin' Cajuns reliever Riley Marcotte.
Louisiana responded in the bottom half of the fifth as Owen Galt led off with an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on Torres' grounder to short. Galt would tie the game when Maddox Mandino grounded up the first-base line and Aaron Biediger's throw to the plate sailed past Collura.
Torres, who was 3-for-4 in the game, delivered in the clutch after the Ragin' Cajuns loaded the bases in the sixth off Nicholls reliever Coen van'T Klooster (0-5).
Caleb Stelly reached on a one-out single up the middle and moved to second when Lee Amedee was hit by a pitch. Carson Hepworth drew a walk to load the bases for Louisiana before Stelly was retired at home for the second out of the inning.
Torres would then drive a 2-and-2 pitch into the right-center field gap for Louisiana, scoring Amedee, Hepworth and Galt for a 5-2 lead.
Higgs drove in his second run of the night in the seventh when his sacrifice fly to deep center scored Drew Markle, who led off the frame with an infield single.
Theut (1-1) earned his first victory on the mound for Louisiana since April 28, 2023 when he pitched 5.0 innings against Coastal Carolina. The senior left-hander allowed a sixth-inning double to Fisher Ingersoll while fanning four batters and retiring the final seven batters he faced.
Hess struck out four batters and scattered three hits in 2.2 innings for Louisiana while Marcotte allowed one hit in 2.0 innings of relief. Sam Ardoin made his pitching debut in the fifth inning for the Ragin' Cajuns, getting Narvin Booker to pop out after the Colonels put runners on the corners.
Dalton Hill pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three hits for Nicholls while van'T Klooster allowed a pair of hits and three runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Luke McGibboney, who was a member of the 2023 Ragin' Cajuns squad, pitched the final 2.0 innings for the Colonels, scattering three hits with a strikeout.
Louisiana will return to Sun Belt Conference play beginning on Friday when it hosts Georgia Southern in a three-game series at Russo Park. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
New Ragin' Cajuns Men's Basketball Coach Quannas White will throw out the first pitch in Friday's opener with members of the 2000 College World Series team being recognized prior to the game on Saturday.
