Louisiana Heads to Tuscaloosa for Alabama Relays

Cajuns look to turn in a strong performance as they head towards the homestretch of the season
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The Louisiana track and field team looks to continue its historic season this weekend with a big showing at the Alabama Relays beginning on Friday in Tuscaloosa.
Louisiana is well-positioned for the Sun Belt Conference Championships in less than a month. The Ragin' Cajuns currently have 24 of the top five scores in the league, with 13 on the men's side and 11 on the women's. They also have six of the best scores in the conference, including Isabelle Russell in the 5000, Kimola Hines in the discus, Joe Patterson in the 800 and 1500, and the men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
Last weekend, the Cajuns posted strong scores at the Pelican Relays and the Doc Anderson Invitational. At the Invitational, Nelvin Appiah won the decathlon with 6695 points, a career high. The senior also posted seven career-bests in the events and earned SBC Field Athlete of the Week honors. Federico Bovo was right behind him with 6404 points in second place.
Kimola Hines moved into first place in the conference by a wide margin in the discus with a throw of 172-2/52.49, which was also the third-best throw in school history. Laila Guy posted the best shot put throw of the year for Louisiana at 46-8.75/14.24m while Chaniqua Tonge's 23.98 in the 200m is the best score by a Cajun this season.
Louisiana is off next week before competing in the LSU Alumni Gold Meet for their final tune-up before the conference championships which begin on May 8 in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
