Louisiana returns to SBC play to face Warhawks
MONROE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Baseball team continues its seven-game road swing on Friday when it opens a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against ULM at Lou St. Amant Field.
First pitch for Friday's opener is set for 6 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by the finale on Sunday at 1. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the games in Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Louisiana (16-20, 7-5 SBC), currently one game behind SBC co-leaders Southern Miss, Troy, Coastal Carolina and Georgia State in the league standings, looks to rebound after dropping the final two games last weekend against Texas State. The Ragin' Cajuns claimed the opening game of the series against the Bobcats, 2-0, before dropping last Saturday's game by an identical 2-0 score and a 4-3 loss in the finale.
The opener against ULM (16-18, 3-9 SBC) will mark the 160th on the diamond between the schools with Louisiana holding a 104-55 lead. Louisiana has won nine of the last 10 meetings against the Warhawks – including seven straight – while claiming 17 of the last 20 contests.
Conor Higgs (.336-11-24) leads Louisiana in average, home runs and RBI with freshman Owen Galt (.321-0-10) and Caleb Stelly (291-5-18) following. Jose Torres (.278-1-20) is second on the team in RBI for the Ragin' Cajuns with Carson Hepworth (.267-2-8) coming off a solid series against Texas State and Maddox Mandino (.265-1-4) coming off a 3-for-4 performance at the plate on Wednesday at Louisiana Tech.
Louisiana will send left-hander Chase Morgan (2-1, 1.97 ERA) to the mound in Friday's opener against the Warhawks with Andrew Herrmann (2-3, 4.65 ERA) scheduled to pitch on Saturday and right-hander JR Tollett (3-2, 3.27 ERA) on Sunday.
ULM dropped a pair of games at home last weekend to App State before earning a two-game sweep of in-state rival Northwestern State. The Warhawks will send a pair of right-handers – Joey Cirelli (1-6, 5.80 ERA) and Daniel Gonzalez (3-1, 5.25 ERA) – the mound in the opening two games with Sunday's starter to be determined.
Four regulars in the lineup – Isaiah Walker (.346-4-20), Henry Garcia Jr. (.333-6-33), Bryce Blaser (.328-1-17) and Colby Lunsford (.324-3-14) – are hitting above .300 on the season for ULM with Walker and Garcia combining for 28 of the Warhawks' 49 stolen bases.
