Louisiana Claims SBC Series Opener Over ULM, 9-3

MONROE – Lee Amedee and Conor Higgs each drove in three runs while Chase Morgan and Matthew Holzhammer did their part on the mound as Louisiana scored multiple runs in four innings and earned a 9-3 Sun Belt Conference victory over ULM on Friday at Lou St. Amant Field.

Freshman Griffin Hebert added a pair of hits for Louisiana (17-20, 8-5 SBC), which snapped a four-game losing streak overall while claiming its eighth straight win over ULM (16-19, 3-10 SBC).

The three-game series between the in-state opponents resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.

Louisiana will send left-hander Andrew Herrmann (2-3, 4.65 ERA) to the mound with ULM countering with right-hander Daniel Gonzalez (3-1, 5.25 ERA).

Higgs went 2-for-3 at the plate, including his SBC co-leading 12th home run of the season in the third inning off ULM starter Joey Cirelli (1-7). The senior added a key run in the fifth when after a review of a potential inning-ending double play, slid under the tag of ULM catcher Tony Lindwedel and crediting Caleb Stelly with a sacrifice fly.

Amedee, who finished 3-for-5 at the plate, then followed with an RBI single to drive in Hebert and give Louisiana a 6-1 lead. Amedee opened the scoring for Louisiana in the second with a game-tying RBI single up the middle before adding a two-out double to left in the seventh to drive in Stelly.

Morgan (3-1) scattered six hits and struck out five batters in 5.0 innings of work to claim his first win since March 21 at South Alabama.

The southpaw worked out of an early jam in the first after allowing a double and bunt single, before getting a double play and limiting the Warhawks to a run. Morgan retired the side in the second inning and kept ULM off the board until Bryce Blaser's two-run single in the fifth.

Holzhammer held ULM to a pair of hits and no runs over the final 4.0 innings to earn his second save of the year for the Ragin' Cajuns.
