The Cajuns close out the regular season on Friday at South Alabama
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana men's basketball team couldn't keep pace with Sun Belt Conference preseason favorite Arkansas State in an 83-64 defeat on Wednesday in the final game of the season in the Cajundome. The game saw 65 combined free throws and eight technical fouls.
Mostapha El Moutaouakkil finished the night with 15 points to lead the Cajun offense. Kentrell Garnett added 11 points and led the team with six rebounds. Michael Thomas added eight points and three assists off the bench. London Fields, Christian Wright, and Kyran Ratliff added seven points each.
Louisiana was cold offensively to start the night taking until the 16:19 mark to finally get on the scoreboard with a three by Fields. After a pair of ASU free throws, Fields hit a putback to make it 10-5. The Ragin' Cajuns pulled within three at 14-11 but an ASU three put them back ahead by two scores.
Both offenses had a lid on the basket from there. A Brandon Hardy free throw was the only point in a nearly four-minute-long stretch but a three by the Red Wolves woke up their offense. Trailing by as many as nine in the early part of the first half, the Cajuns got within five at 33-28 with 2:33 to play after a pair of El Moutaoukkil free throws. From there the visitors caught fire, ending the half on an 11-0 run heading into the locker room.
They continued the rally, scoring the first six points of the second half before Fields finally ended the run with a layup. The Cajuns trailed by as many as 28 in the second half before making a run. They cut the deficit in half to 74-60 but by then the game was already out of reach.
Louisiana wraps up the regular season on Friday when they head to Mobile to face South Alabama. With a win the Cajuns can finish as high as the seventh-seed in next week's SBC Championships in Pensacola, Florida.
