Louisiana goes over 11 minutes without a bucket in second half

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana mounted a late second-half rally Friday night, cutting a double-digit deficit to six points in the closing seconds, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held off the Ragin' Cajuns for a 67-60 victory at the Cajundome.

The Ragin' Cajuns (0-2) received a game-high 19 points from Jamyron Keller and 17 points from Mekhi Cooper, but struggled to find their shooting rhythm throughout the contest, missing 13 consecutive attempts and going over 11 minutes without a bucket in the second half. Louisiana finished 15 of 48 from the field (31.3 percent), including 7 of 20 from 3-point range.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-1) took control early, using a late first-half surge to build a 36-28 advantage at the break. The Islanders shot 44 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while limiting Louisiana to 38.1 percent shooting.

The Islanders extended their lead to as many as 15 points in the second half before the Cajuns began chipping away at the deficit. Cooper helped spark the comeback for Louisiana with 10 points in the second half, while Keller added seven points after halftime.

De'Vion Lavergne also provided a late spark, connecting on three 3-pointers in the second half to finish with nine points. His back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute helped Louisiana pull within six points at 66-60 with 18 seconds remaining.

However, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi converted a late free throw to secure the seven-point victory.

Cooper finished 3 of 4 from the field and 9 of 10 at the free-throw line while adding four assists. Keller went 5 of 12 from the floor and 7 of 8 at the charity stripe. Lavergne finished 3 of 10 from the field, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc.

The Islanders were led by Binael Basil, who scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Daniel Michelini-Jackson scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, while Desmond Kent Jr. chipped in 10 – all in the first 20 minutes.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held a 40-22 advantage on the boards and scored 26 points in the paint compared to 16 for Louisiana.

The Ragin' Cajuns will return to the Cajundome on Monday, Nov. 9, when they host Southern-New Orleans. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
