Cajun Offense Can’t Get Going in Regular Season Finale

Louisiana travels to the Sun Belt Conference Championships starting next week

MOBILE, Alabama - The Louisiana men's basketball team's offense was held to a season-low scoring output in a 65-42 defensive struggle with South Alabama on Friday in Mobile.

Louisiana was held without a double-figure scorer in the regular season finale. Kentrell Garnett, Michael Thomas, and Brandon Hardy led the way with nine points each. The trio all had three three-pointers as Louisiana went 9-for-31 from long range. Jeremiah Evans had a solid night off the bench. The freshman grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and added five points in just over 12 minutes of action.

Mostapha El Moutaouakkil started the night with a layup for the team's first bucket but then the offense went cold. South Alabama scored the next 14 points to take a 16-2 lead. They stretched the lead to 17 before the Cajun offense found a little rhythm. El Moutaouakkil got it going with a layup. Hardy and Thomas followed with a pair of threes to get back to within 10.

After a nearly three-minute stretch without a point for either side, Thomas hit another three to get back within single digits. Moments later, Hardy responded to a basket by the Jaguars with a three to make it 24-18. The Jaguars closed the half strong and took a 31-20 lead into the break.

The first 11 points of the second half were scored by the home team to essentially put this one out of reach. Another pair of threes by Hardy and Thomas, followed by a dunk by Evans brought the Cajuns within 11 with 9:45 to go at 46-35. The offense couldn't maintain that momentum as that's the closest the Cajuns would get down the stretch.

A new season begins next week as the Cajuns travel to Pensacola, Florida for the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
