Trip Dobson snags a throw from Wil Taylor to end the ninth inning on Saturday against San Jose State

Louisiana Falls To Spartans In Game Two of Series, 8-3

2/15/2025 6:47:00 PM | Baseball

Rubber game of series set for 11 a.m. on Sunday

LAFAYETTE – San Jose State picked up five hits in a four-run third inning and were aided by a pair of errors in claiming an 8-3 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

The final game of the three-game series is scheduled for 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.

After Louisiana starter Blake McGehee (0-1) breezed through the first two innings, San Jose State (1-1) would strike in the third with a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases.

Jeriah Lewis' sacrifice fly cut the lead to 2-1 before Rocco Caballero's two-run double put the Spartans up for good. Zach Chamizo added an RBI single to score Caballero before the Cajuns were able to get out of the inning.

"It wasn't as competitive as I'd like to see us," said Louisiana head coach Matt Deggs, "and it's a tough day to hit with the wind in your face, but both teams had the same conditions.

"They (San Jose State) found a way to get the key hit and we scuffled for a lot of the game. But, there's some younger guys that are hungry. I love the way we finished the game. (Freshman) Wil Taylor made a great play right there in the ninth and I thought he pitched well."

Taylor, the fourth pitcher used by Louisiana in the game, pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief with a pair of strikeouts. Dylan Theut, making his first appearance in a game since April 28, 2023, pitched 3.1 innings in relief of McGehee and allowed a pair of hits and two strikeouts.

The Spartans added a pair of unearned runs off Louisiana, one in the fourth when Alex Fernandes singled, moved to third to a base hit and scored on a throwing error, before reaching on a dropped fly ball and scoring on JC Osorio-Agard's RBI grounder to short.

Raoul Fabian Jr. added an RBI single in the eighth before Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk. EJ McGrew (1-0) scattered a pair of hits and struck out two in 3.0 innings of relief to earn the win for Sam Jose State. Fernandes finished 3-for-4 at the plate and scored four times as the Spartans forced the rubber game of the series.

Louisiana scored a run in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead off SJSU starter David Thomas. Caleb Stelly's two-out RBI single in the first inning scored Maddox Mandino before Sam Ardoin's bloop single past a drawn-in infield scored Jose Torres.

The Ragin' Cajuns added a run in the ninth as true freshman Brooks Wright and Griffin Hebert hit back-to-back doubles. Kasen Bellard, another true freshman making his collegiate debut, added an infield single before Spartan reliever Tyler Albanese recorded a pair of strikeouts to preserve the win.

"The freshmen at the end of the game played well, getting back-to back knocks," Deggs said. "We've got a bench full of those guys. It's a very competitive team, and it's just about figuring out who fits where, and obviously we didn't play very well the day. We'll bounce back tomorrow."
