Louisiana continues seven-game homestand against Texas Southern, Nebraska
LAFAYETTE – San Jose State capitalized on four Louisiana errors to score six unearned runs and pull away late for a 12-4 win over the Ragin' Cajuns in the series finale for both teams on Sunday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
Alex Fernandes went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead an 11-hit attack as San Jose State (2-1) scored in its last four innings. Louisiana, which will continue its season-opening, seven-game home stand with games against Texas Southern (Feb. 18) and Nebraska (Feb. 21-23), fell to 1-2 on the season.
"We just didn't play good the last couple of games there and that's on me," Louisiana head coach Matt Deggs said. "We've got to play better. I thought we got outplayed, got out-coached, and that's on me. We got to do a better job of understanding our personnel and putting guys in the right spots and make plays."
Louisiana trailed 2-0 after JC Osario-Agard's two-out home run in the second inning before rallying to claim a 3-2 lead.
Freshman Owen Galt, making his collegiate debut, led off the second inning with a double and scored on Brooks Wright's sacrifice fly to left. Wright, a true freshman making his first career start, would give Louisiana a 3-2 lead in the fifth when he drove in Jose Torres with an RBI single to left.
The Spartans would reclaim the lead in the sixth, scoring a pair of unearned runs off a pair of Ragin' Cajuns errors. Raoul Fabian Jr. reached on a leadoff error to third before scoring on Fernandes' RBI double to right-center off Louisiana reliever Tate Hess (0-1).
Fernandes then stole third and scored on a Louisiana throwing error, putting San Jose State up 4-3.
San Jose scored two more unearned runs in the seventh on Fernandes' two-out double off Riley Marcotte before adding five runs in the eighth and a solo home run by Rocco Caballero in the ninth.
"We're young and basically it's a new group out there. It may take a second, but I feel horrible for our fans ... they deserve better," Deggs said. "Especially these last two games. They came out in full force and gave us everything they had, but we will get better. We always do, and we've got some players here. It may just take a second."
Fabian and Jake Maroney had two hits each as San Jose State's bottom four hitters combined for eight hits. Nolan George (1-0) pitched the final 4.2 innings to earn the victory for the Spartans, allowing a pair of hits and striking out four.
Wright led Louisiana at the plate going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Torres added an RBI single in the fifth for the Ragin' Cajuns while Hess pitched a career-best 4.0 innings on the mound with three strikeouts. Parker Dillhoff, earning the start in his Louisiana debut, struck out four batters and scattered three hits in a 60-pitch performance.
