Mostapha El Moutaouakkil and Jeremiah Evans combined for 29 in the effort
LAFAYETTE - Despite a strong defensive effort in the first half, the Louisiana men's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start offensively in a 74-56 defeat against Troy.
Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led the offense with 19 points to go with three rebounds. Jeremiah Evans added 10 points, the second double-digit scoring game of his career, on 5-of-7 shooting. Kentrell Garnett added nine to the effort.
Louisiana jumped out to an early lead thanks to a three by Garnett and five points from El Moutaouakkil at 8-5. The sides traded buckets and a London Fields jumper gave Louisiana a 12-11 lead. The Trojans responded with the next five points to retake the lead. Evans ended the run with a basket but Troy ended the half on a 13-6 run and took a 29-20 lead into the locker room.
Troy stretched the lead to 22 early in the second half before the Cajuns started to climb back into the game. Three times the Cajuns got back within 12 but couldn't get the game any closer as the Trojans pulled away down the stretch.
Louisiana returns to the court on Saturday against Marshall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and before the game the team will honor their seniors as part of Senior Day.
