LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana men's basketball team honored their seniors in style with a wire-to-wire, 79-68, win over Marshall on Saturday in the Cajundome on Senior Night.
Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led everyone with 23 points along with eight boards. The junior was 7-for-15 from the field and 9-of-14 from the free throw line. Senior Christian Wright finished with 20 points, going 6-for-9 from the field and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe. Fellow senior Kentrell Garnett had 11 points and six boards, tying a career-high.
Seniors Michael Thomas added eight points and four rebounds while Zeke Cook finished with two points and six rebounds. Off the bench, freshman Jeremiah Evans chipped in six points and seven rebounds.
Cook scored on a layup on Louisiana's first possession and the Cajuns never looked back. They built an 8-0 lead before the Thundering Herd finally got on the board four minutes into the game. Louisiana got the lead to double digits at 18-8 on a jumper by Garnett before Marshall's 5-0 run got them back within two possessions.
With the Cajuns leading 24-17, Wright hit back-to-back threes to give them their largest lead of the night. Louisiana looked to take a double digit lead into the locker room but a 6-0 run in the final two minutes and change by the Herd sent the game into the half, 35-30 in favor of the Cajuns.
Marshall cut the Louisiana lead to two at 36-34 before the duo of El Moutaouakkil and Wright took over. They combined for the next eight Cajun points as part of an 8-0 run that sealed the game. The Cajuns led by as many as 16 in the second half before some late points by Marshall made the final margin 11.
Louisiana hits the road next week, opening with Troy on Thursday.
