Mayes Sets School Shutouts Record, Offense Breaks Out in 5-0 Win Over USM

Natalie Mayes became the school’s all-time leader in shutouts as the offense had one of its best SBC performances in over a decade
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana soccer record book was under attack in a dominant 5-0 victory over Southern Miss on Thursday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
Natalie Mayes needed just three saves to post the 12th shutout of her Cajun career to break the career record, a year after setting the single-season record.
"What we see on camera is only half of it," said head coach Chris McBride. "The commanding of the box, the organization, the leadership, her distribution, all that leads to a clean sheet, not just the saves. She works tremendously hard and has grown so much over the last three years, and the fact that she set the record as a junior, hopefully, she can continue to set the standard for future players."
The offense was clicking early and often for the Ragin' Cajuns. After three brilliant looks in the opening minutes, with two hitting the post and another sailing just high, the Cajuns finally broke through in the ninth minute with Miku Kurihara's second of the season. The score remained there until the final 20 seconds of the half, when Chloe Mueller's header off a corner kick gave Louisiana a little space heading into the locker room.
Charlotte Hinchey added to the lead just 4:24 out of the locker room after a loose ball found her feet off of a cross, for the first of her career. Minutes later, Salma Elahimer netted her fourth of the season for the fourth goal of the night. Addison Soehn capped the scoring in the final minute after a terrific cross over gave her space. It was the first goal in the freshman's career.
"It's good, but it's one game," said McBride. "It could've happened a lot for us this season, but we're not going to focus on the past. We want to carry this into Sunday and into the next week with a stretch of big games coming up. The biggest takeaway from this is how we executed and how we were successful in these moments, and make sure that carries over. We have to celebrate the moment, but we have to make sure we turn up on Sunday as well."
For the Ragin' Cajuns, it was their largest win in Sun Belt Conference action since a 6-0 victory over ULM in 2010. It was also the team's first five-goal performance in conference play since their contest against Texas State in 2013 and just the fourth such game in program history.
Louisiana hits the road for the next two, starting with a trip to San Marcos to take on Texas State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
