Jeremiah Evans scored a career-high 19 on 7-of-8 shooting

LAFAYETTE - After a quiet start to his collegiate career, Jeremiah Evans broke out in a big way on Thursday with 19 points for the Louisiana men's basketball team. It wasn't enough for the Ragin' Cajuns as they fell to Old Dominion, 71-60.

Evans scored his 19 on 7-of-8 shooting and made all four of his free throw attempts. Coming into the night, the freshman was averaging just 2.1 points per game on the year and was scoreless in Sun Belt action. Mostapha El Moutaouakkil also finished in double figures with 16 points to continue his strong scoring output in league play.

Louisiana started slow offensively as Old Dominion jumped out to a 13-2 lead. The Cajun defense took over, keeping the Monarchs off the scoreboard, and allowing them to climb back into the game. Trailing 24-14, the offense came to life. Evans got things going with a three and London Fields followed with a pair of free throws.

Kyndall Davis made it a one-possession game with a jumper and El Moutaouakkil tied it with a layup with 2:46 to go. Michael Thomas gave Louisiana their first lead of the game at 26-23, but Old Dominion hit three threes in the final 90 seconds of the half to lead 32-30 into the locker room.

The Cajuns started the second half strong, taking a five-point lead behind a three by Kentrell Garnett and a putback by Davis. The Monarchs responded with a 9-0 to take a lead they'd never relinquish. Evans ended the run with a layup to keep Louisiana within a score but that was as close as Louisiana would be over the final 14 minutes.

Louisiana is now one of eight teams in the Sun Belt with a league record of 2-2. The Cajuns will host in-state rival ULM on Saturday at 7 p.m. as the Warhawks look for their first conference win of the season.
