Kentrell Garnett led the team with 15 points while playing in his program-record 137th game
LAFAYETTE - Trailing for much of the game and never leading by more than four points, the Louisiana men's basketball team pulled off a hard-fought win over in-state rival ULM, 71-68, on Saturday in the Cajundome.
Kentrell Garnett made history on Saturday, setting a program record with 137 games played. The senior left everything on the court, leading the team with 15 points while adding five assists and a pair of rebounds without a break as he played all 40 minutes. He was one of four players to finish in double figures, joined by London Field, Kyran Ratliff, and Mostapha El Moutaouakkil who all finished with 10 in the win.
Fields scored all of his 10 in the opening half, sparking the offense with a pair of threes. Ratliff followed his lead with all 10 of his points in the second half, including a pair of threes down the stretch. The sophomore added five rebounds to the effort. El Moutaouakkil ended the night with 10 points and five rebounds. Christian Wright had a strong night off the bench after missing Thursday's game due to illness. The senior had nine points, three assists, three steals, and three rebounds, along with four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Louisiana struggled out of the gate as the Warhawks took a 12-4 lead. Fields then went to work, scoring the next 10 Cajun points to put them ahead 14-13. ULM slowly built a 26-20 lead before Louisiana went to work in the final five minutes of the half. Jeremiah Evans made a driving layup before Garnett hit a three to make it a one-point game. Wright followed with a three for a 28-26 Cajun lead. ULM closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room.
The Cajuns struggled again out of the gates as the Warhawks built a 43-32 lead. Garnett stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer and the Cajuns began chipping away at the lead. Brandon Hardy got going with a layup and Garnett hit a jumper to get Louisiana within five. After a defensive stop, Hardy connected from the wing on a three to make it a 48-46 ULM lead.
El Moutaouakkil tied the game with a pair of free throws, erasing the 11-point deficit in just over six-and-a-half minutes of game time. The Warhawks ended a 9-0 Louisiana run with a bucket but Ratliff connected on a three from the corner to go back ahead by one. After exchanging buckets, Garnett's two with 8:13 to go put Louisiana ahead and they never trailed again.
Kyndall Davis hit a big three with a one-point lead to make it 58-54 with 6:42 to play, which gave Louisiana their largest lead of the night. Ratliff's three with 3:08 to go broke a 62-62 tie and put Louisiana on top for good. ULM got to within a point, three times down the stretch but free throws sealed the deal. The Cajuns were 10-for-11 from the charity stripe in the second half and 14-for-16 for the game. The Warhawks struggled from the free throw line, ending the night 15-for-25.
Louisiana hits the road next week, only a game back of first place in the Sun Belt Conference. The Cajuns open the week at SBC preseason favorite Arkansas State on Thursday before a rematch with the Warhawks on Saturday in Monroe.
