Mostapha El Moutaouakkil once again led the offense with 17 points
ATLANTA, GA - The Louisiana men's basketball team fell for the first time in Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday. The Cajun offense started slow in a 94-70 defeat at Georgia State.
Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led the offense with 17 points, doing most of his damage at the free throw line where he went 9-for-9. The junior also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in the effort. Kentrell Garnett had 13 points, connecting from three-point range three times. Christian Wright finished with 11 while Kyndall Davis had 10 for the Cajuns.
Davis got the offense going with a three to put the Cajuns ahead early. El Moutaouakkil hit a pair of free throws and Louisiana jumped out to an 8-4 lead. The Panthers scored the next six points to take the lead before a three by Garnett.
Louisiana led 13-12 when Georgia State took the momentum with a 13-0 run. Garnett kept the Cajuns within seven with a three but the Panthers scored the next 10 to stretch it to a 35-18 game.
The Panthers led by as many as 28 in the second half but the Cajuns cut into the deficit. A layup by Wright made it a 15-point game with over four minutes to play but that was as close as the offense got down the stretch.
The Ragin' Cajuns are back home next week as they continue SBC play. They'll open the week on Thursday against Old Dominion in the Cajundome, the first meeting between the schools in Lafayette.
