Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds
JONESBORO, Arkansas - The Louisiana men's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start on the offensive end in an 83-63 defeat at Arkansas State on Thursday.
The Ragin' Cajuns were led offensively by Mostapha El Moutaouakkil, who finished the night with 18 points and eight rebounds. Kentrell Garnett and Christian Wright each added 10 while Kyran Ratliff and Chancellor White scored eight off the bench.
Louisiana fell behind by seven before El Moutaouakkil scored the team's first points of the night. The junior kept the Cajuns in the ballgame with the team's first six points in a 12-6 game. The Red Wolves took a 30-14 lead before both offenses went ice cold. Each side hit a three as the only field goal in a three-and-a-half minute stretch before Zeke Cook's putback ended the slide. Arkansas State continued to score and took a 44-24 lead into the locker room.
Both offenses traded baskets early in the second half as the Cajuns cut into their deficit. A bucket by Wright brought Louisiana within 13, but an 8-0 by the Red Wolves run ended the chances of a comeback.
The Cajuns return to the court on Saturday at 2 p.m. to face in-state rival ULM in Monroe.
