Kentrell Garnett led all players with 18 points in the win
MONROE, Louisiana - The Louisiana men's basketball team hung on to a crucial road win over ULM on Saturday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe. The Cajuns scored the final six points for the 65-60 win and their third sweep of ULM in the last four seasons.
Kentrell Garnett led everyone with 18 points. The senior was lethal from long range, finishing the game 5-for-8 from deep. Mostapha El Moutaouakkil once again finished in double figures with 12 points and was a rebound shy of his first double-double. Jeremiah Evans added eight points, going 4-for-4 from the field, with five rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Louisiana came out firing, hitting their first two shots to take a 5-0 lead in the opening minute. ULM answered back and knotted the game at seven before the Cajun offense responded with the next six points. El Moutaouakkil got the run going before Kyndall Davis and Evans finished at the rim for the 13-7 lead.
The Warhawks wouldn't go away and battled back to take a one-point lead at the 8:35 mark but that lead lasted all of 22 seconds thanks to a layup by Evans. Garnett followed with a three to put Louisiana ahead by four. The Cajuns led by three when Garnett hit another three and Zeke Cook made a layup for the 31-23 lead. Evans stretched the lead to 10, but a three on ULM's final possession saw Louisiana take a 35-28 lead into the half.
After both sides traded buckets early in the second half, Garnett put Louisiana ahead once again by double figures with a circus shot. ULM, looking for their first Sun Belt Conference win of the season, refused to go away. Back-to-back threes by the Warhawks but into the Cajun lead at 54-50. Garnett responded with a three from the wing for the 57-50 lead with 8:21 to go.
Louisiana's offense went cold, not making a field goal the rest of the way. ULM trimmed the deficit to one when El Moutaouakkil hit a pair of free throws to lead 59-56 with 5:38. A basket by the home team at 4:15 made it a one-point ballgame before both offenses went cold.
The Warhawks retook the lead with 1:19, the next points by either side, on a layup. Their lead lasted 27 seconds when a driving Brandon Hardy was fouled. Hardy hit both to put the Cajuns back on top, 61-60. Davis hit two more free throws with 22 seconds left and with seven seconds to play, Cook calmly hit a pair to seal the win.
Louisiana led for 37:48 and trailed for just 48 seconds. The Cajuns went 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the second half after shooting just one free throw in the first half.
The Cajuns look to keep pace in the SBC next Thursday as they host Texas State at 3 p.m. in the Cajundome.
