Ortego's 70 Leads Louisiana In Opening Round at Squire Creek

Louisiana two strokes off team lead after first 18 holes
CHOUDRANT – Eli Ortego opened his senior season with a 2-under-par 70 and Louisiana fired a team score of even-par-288 to finish two strokes off the lead after the opening round of the 2024 Argent Financial Classic on Sunday at Squire Creek Country Club.

The second round of the 54-hole event will start at 7:30 a.m., on Monday. Louisiana, which claimed last year's event with UAB and Southern Miss, will tee off the second round at 11:20 a.m., on Monday and will be paired with Troy and host Louisiana Tech. Ortego, who shared team medalist (72.58) honors last season with teammate Malan Potgieter, opened at the No. 10 with three bogeys and a birdie through his first four holes before recording a birdie at No. 17 to make the turn at 1-over-37. The Lafayette native caught fire on the front nine with four birdies to finish in a tie for fifth place while recording his 58th career score of par or better.

Burke Alford opened the event for Louisiana with a 1-under 71 to finish in tied for 10th after 18 holes with Dylan Keating recording a 1-over-73 in the 2024-25 debut. Potgieter added a 2-over-74 for the Ragin' Cajuns with Kyle Bennett posting a 4-over 76 in his Louisiana debut.

Newcomer Jean Louis du Plessis, playing individually, fired a 7-over 79 in his Ragin' Cajuns debut.

South Alabama and Rice shared the opening day lead in the 17-team field at 2-under-286 with Houston (287), Louisiana (288) and Troy (289) rounding out the top five scores. Rice's Lukas Boandl, aided by a pair of eagle on the back nine, claimed the first-day lead with a 7-under-65 with Joshua Hill of South Alabama two strokes back with a 5-under-67.
