Louisiana claims first-round lead before slipping to fourth after 36 holes
LINCOLN, Neb. – Eli Ortego claimed the first-round lead after posting a 7-under-par 64 and Louisiana recorded a 275 in the opening round to claim the early lead before slipping to fourth place after 36 holes of the Git-R-Done Invitational on Monday at Firethorn Golf Club.
Louisiana, which finished at 569 after the opening two rounds in the 12-team field, will conclude the 54-hole event on Tuesday beginning at 8:10 a.m. The Ragin' Cajuns will be paired with Xavier and Nebraska's B Team in the final round with live results available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
Malan Potgieter added a 6-under-par 65 with Jean Louis du Plessis posting an even-par 71 in the opening round for Louisiana, which claimed a four-stroke lead over Sam Houston (279) after 18 holes. In the afternoon session, Sam Houston responded with a blistering 272 to finish 551 after 36 holes and 10 strokes ahead of second-place South Alabama (281-280-561).
Ortego posted nine birdies in the opening round to claim a one-stroke lead over Potgieter after 18 holes and finish one stroke off his career best (8-under-63) set at the 2022 Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate. The senior posted a 3-over-74 in the second round to finish in fourth place at 4-under-138 after 36 holes and five strokes behind Sam Houston's tandem of Bret Gray and Hugo Trommetter for the overall lead.
Potgieter, who finished 11th overall after 36 holes at 2-under-140, bested his previous low round (67) last set at the 2024 Mossy Oak Collegiate. The junior enjoyed a bogey-free round to open the tournament, producing three birdies on each the front and back nine before recording a 4-over 75 in the second round.
Du Plessis (71-76-147) and Carter Schmitt (75-72-147) each finished tied for 40th overall for Louisiana with Matthew Lotz (78-73-151) rallying in the final round to equal his career-low score in his 2024-25 debut.
