Schmitt's 4-under-67 highlights Cajuns third-place finish in 54-hole event
LINCOLN, Neb. – Carter Schmitt recorded a 4-under-par 67 to wrap up his first event in a Ragin' Cajuns uniform and join teammates Eli Ortego and Malan Potgieter with top-20 finishes as Louisiana moved up one spot on the final day and finished third overall at the Git-R-Done Invitational on Tuesday at Firethorn Golf Club.
Ortego added the third top-5 finish in his career with a 1-under-par 70 to finish at 5-under-208 while Potgieter recorded his 12th top-20 performance after finishing at even-par 213 in the 54-hole event.
"We saw a lot of positives to take from this week," said head coach Theo Sliman. "We saw Eli and Malan come out the gates strong and both post a low round together … that is a powerful combination.
"After having the lead in the first round, we had a bit of struggle in the second (round) that should make us stronger and more prepared for the next time we are in that position. A position we feel that we can be in again soon."
Schmitt, a Baton Rouge native and Division II transfer making his debut for Louisiana, made the biggest jump up the leaderboard in the final round after beginning in a tie for 40th. Schmitt, who finished one stroke off his collegiate low (6-under-66), carved out four birdies on the front nine and made the turn at 3-under-33 before sinking a birdie putt at No. 10 to move to 4-under.
"The final round was a grind, and I was very excited and proud of the grit we saw with Carter in his debut as a Ragin' Cajun," Sliman added. "The main theme this year is to learn every week and apply the next week. We look forward to getting home and preparing for our next event (Oct. 6-8) at SMU."
Ortego, who fired a 7-under-64 in Monday's opening round, dropped his first birdie in the final round at No. 9 and added three more birdies on the back nine to finish six shots off the lead. The senior shaved 12 strokes off his 54-hole season-best while recording his third round of the season at par or below.
Potgieter posted his second top-20 performance of the season after finishing with a 2-over-73 in the final round and finishing tied for 14th. Jean Louis du Plessis (71-76-78-225) finished tied for 48th for the Ragin' Cajuns with Matthew Lotz (78-73-80-231) finishing tied for 60th in his 2024-25 debut.
First-day leader Sam Houston, paced by individual medalist Hugo Trommetter, claimed the team title after posting a 279 in the final round and finishing at 830 overall. South Alabama finished eight strokes back at 838 with Louisiana (857), Xavier (858) and host Nebraska (859) rounding out the top five.
Louisiana will return to action on Oct. 6-8 when it travels to Dallas, Texas to compete in SMU's Trinity Forest Invitational Golf Club.
