Cajun Women Continue to Lead Heading Into Final Day of SBC Championships

Louisiana is one of two schools with the men and women in the top four heading into tomorrow
MONROE, Louisiana - One day separates the Louisiana track and field team from history at the Sun Belt Conference Championships at Groseclose Track at Brown Stadium in Monroe, Louisiana. After two days of competition, the Cajun women lead the field with 57.5 points while the men sit fourth with 29.
Taylor Walls had a huge day for Louisiana. The senior took second place in the heptathlon with a score of 5,189, the second most in school history. She then turned around and placed fifth in the long jump at 19-9/6.02, a personal best.
The women also picked up big points in the final event of the day, the 3,000 Steeplechase. Skylar Delgado took third at 11:06.16 while Caroline Spalitta's time of 11:26.64 put her eighth.
Federico Bovo got the Cajuns going on the men's side with a fourth-place finish in the decathlon with 6,830 points. Nick Russell also took home fourth in the pole vault at 16-5.5/5.02. Montrell Morris took sixth in the long jump at 23-8.75/7.23. The Cajuns closed the night with second and third-place finishes in the 3,000 Steeplechase with Peyton Chiasson crossing the finish line at 9:07.95 just ahead of Mason Haley's 9:10.66.
Louisiana will be heavily represented in tomorrow's finals after a big day in qualifying. The day began with the 400H, in which Javed Jones dusted the field and qualified in first at 52.16. Jones continued to dominate, qualifying first in the 400 with a personal-best 46.17.
Jamhad Booth also had a strong day for the Cajuns, qualifying in both the finals of the 100 () and 200 (21.6). Chris Gravois joined him in the 200 with a time of 21.29.
Kennedy London (13.64) and Kayla Meyers (13.86) raced their way into the finals of the 100H, while on the men's side, Cole Palmer (13.98) and Kobe Mendez (14.14) ran their way into the 110H finals.
In the 800, the Cajuns will be represented in the finals by Alexandra Johnson (2:12.81) and Andrew Leck (1:53.64). Amairi Ashford (11.61) and Mari Robinson (11.65) will run tomorrow for Louisiana in the final of the 100.
The women are in a tight race for first place after two days of the SBC Championships. They lead the pack with 57.5 points, just ahead of five-time defending champion Arkansas State at 54, and Texas State at 52. The men moved up to fourth and trail South Alabama (90), Arkansas State (45), and App State (40).
The final day begins at noon with the men's triple jump and women's discus before track events start at 4 p.m. with the women's 4x100.
