Amedee, Strong Pitching Lead Cajuns Past Demons, 3-0

NATCHITOCHES – Lee Amedee's three hits, including his first career home run, led an nine-hit attack and Murphy Brooks and five relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as Louisiana blanked Northwestern State, 3-0, on Wednesday at Brown-Stroud Field.
Freshman Maddox Mandino and Jose Torres had two hits each as Louisiana (6-6) capped off a four-game roadtrip with its second shutout of the season. Northwestern State, which lost to the Cajuns last week before taking two of three from visiting Troy, fell to 4-9.
"He's waited and waited his turn and he had a huge night for us, but this night centers on the (pitching) staff and the start Murphy gave us," head coach Matt Deggs said. "And then C-Mo (Chase Morgan) behind him, (Blake) McGehee, David Christie, (Steven) Cash ... he had a huge punchout.
"We got it to David and Hammer (Matthew Holzhammer), and it was good to see Hammer redeem himself out there. It was a big win. I don't care who you're playing. It got us back on the right side of things."
Amedee, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI, collected base hits in his final three at-bats beginning with a fourth-inning single, an RBI double in the sixth and a solo home run in the eighth.
That was enough for Brooks (2-0) who scattered three hits and fanned six batters in 3.0 innings of work. Freshman Chase Morgan tossed two innings of hitless relief with three strikeouts for Louisiana – which fanned 15-plus batters for the third straight game and 57 in its last four games. Blake McGehee fanned four batters in 1.1 innings of work before Steven Cash, David Christie and Matthew Holzhammer closed the game out.
Torres broke up a scoreless duel in the fourth when his RBI single to center off NSU starter Kevin Robinson (0-1) with two outs plated Jackson Halter. Louisiana added a run in the sixth when Kyle DeBarge led off with a single and scored when Amedee doubled to the right-field corner off NSU reliever John Shahrdar.
Amedee greeted Demon reliever Tim O'Connor with his first career homer – a liner into the right-field bullpen to increase Louisiana's lead to 3-0.
Cash and David Christie pitched a combined 1.2 innings for the Ragin' Cajuns before Holzhammer pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Robinson, making his second career appearance, scattered five hits and struck out two for Northwestern State. Daniel Burroway went 2-for-4 to lead the Demons at the plate and Rocco Gump and Bo Willis each adding a double.
Louisiana returns to action on Friday when it opens a three-game series against Tulane at M.L. "Tigue" Moore at Russo Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the game being streamed live on ESPN+.
