Four-goal scoring spree leads Cajuns to win in opener against Bengals

LAFAYETTE - Megan Bradley got a pair of goals, with Cassandra Decombe, Lucy Ortiz, and Hailly Waterhouse also adding to the board as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team blanked LSU-Eunice in the first match of their twinbill at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex on Saturday.
 
In the nightcap, Penelope Montenegro scored a pair of goals while Sophie Placke added and unassisted goal in a 3-0 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
 
Natalie Mayes scored her first shutout of the 2024 Spring season, while Tatum Beck, Sisley Stephens, Ortiz, and Mariella Stephens each recorded an assist.
 
MATCH 1 – LOUISIANA 5, LSU-EUNICE 0
The scoring started with Bradley's lone goal of the first half after receiving a pass back in the box from Tatum to put the Cajuns up 1-0.
 
Decombe increased the lead early in the second half off of a pass from Sisley Stephens, where Decombe took a touch pass before her attempt got past past the hands of the LSU-E's goalkeeper. Not long after, Bradley added to the scoreboard again from Ortiz's pass down the line.
 
Ortiz scored to give Louisiana a 4-0 lead after taking a pass from Mariella Stephens later in the half. The scoring ended with Waterhouse sneaking in a goal near the end of the match.
 
MATCH 2 – LOUISIANA 3, MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE 0
Montenegro scored a pair of goals late in the first half, with Sophie Placke adding her first goal of the spring season and an assist, leading the Ragin Cajuns to a 3-0 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
 
Mayes had a few saves in goal for Louisiana, leading to the second shutout of the spring 2024 season. Louisiana improved to 2-0 during its seven-match Spring schedule.
 
Montenegro started the scoring with her first goal of the spring off a pass from Placke in the 26th minute of the opening half. The Cajuns quickly increased the lead with a pair of unassisted goals by Montenegro and Placke, putting them up 3-0.
 
Louisiana continues the spring season in March with two road matches beginning with LSU on March 8th at 5 p.m. and Houston Christian on March 23. Louisiana will end its spring season at home against Southern on April 7 before a final twinbill on April 13 against LSU-Alexandria and Xavier.
