The two-day event begins Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - The Louisiana track and field team looks to cap the 2024 indoor season with a strong finish at the Sun Belt Conference Championships beginning Monday, February 19 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Last season the Cajun men finished second while the women placed sixth.
Â
The Cajuns should be a factor this week in Birmingham to find themselves on the podium. This season they have a top-5 score in 11 events, and in 21 events have a top-10 showing this season. The men's DMR squad of Samuel Avants, Antoni Hoyte-Small, Andrew Leck, and Peyton Chiasson head into the week with the best time in the Sun Belt this season in the event. They ran a time of 10:01.71 at the Robert Platt Invitational for the second-fastest time in program history.
Â
Half of the SBC's top-10 in the men's 200-meter are Cajuns. Leading the way is Trejun Jones (21.35) for the third-best time in the league, while Mekhi Boutte (21.41) and Zakhy Monro (21.43) round out the top five. Chris Gravois (21.63) and Jamhad Booth (21.72) aren't far behind in seventh and ninth place each.
Â
Joe Patterson is just three seconds in back of the top spot in the SBC in the 800-meter but sits with the third-best time this season in the league.Â
Â
Tyren Hannah held onto the best weight throw for nearly a month before he was bested over the weekend but less than five inches. Freshman Teodor Borgius could also make a push for the podium this week in the pole vault with the third-highest jump in the league at 16 ft. 11.5 in.Â
Â
On the women's side, the 4x400-meter relay's time of 3:46.31 is the third fastest this season and they look to factor into the podium.Â
