Kentrell Garnett hits the go-ahead three against SLU

Garnett’s Late Heroics Leads Louisiana to 68-61 Win Over SLU

The senior’s go-ahead three in the final minute snapped a seven-game skid

LAFAYETTE Kentrell Garnett's three with 42 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in the Louisiana men's basketball team's 68-61 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday in the Cajundome. The Ragin' Cajuns closed the game on a 10-0 run to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Kyndall Davis led the Cajuns with a season-high 15 points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Garnett scored 10 points with five boards. The senior is one three-pointer shy of becoming the seventh player in program history to reach the 200-make plateau.

Mostapha El Moutaouakkil also finished in double figures with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Making his season debut after missing the first nine games due to injury, Brandon Hardy had a busy night. The sophomore scored seven points and added two rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block in just under 19 minutes.

"It's good to get a win, a team win," said head coach Bob Marlin. "Everybody played and I thought everybody contributed. Southeastern's got a really good basketball team, that won at Tulane, that won at Monroe, should have won at Wyoming, and played good enough tonight for most of the game to win here. But our guys stayed the course. We made winning plays late when we needed to."

The Lions jumped out to the early 4-1 lead but Davis' first three of the night tied the score. SLU answered with the next five points before the sides traded baskets for the next three minutes. A 7-0 run by the visitors saw them extend the lead to 12.

A three-point play by Christian Wright and back-to-back buckets by El Moutaouakkil cut the deficit to five. With 1:09 to play in the half, El Moutaouakkil got Louisiana within two before the game went into the locker room with the Lions ahead 35-31.

Out of the half, the Lions stretched their lead back to nine but back-to-back Michael Thomas threes kept the Cajuns within a score. Out of a timeout, Hardy connected from deep, his first basket of the season, tying the score at 47. Moments later a layup from Zeke Cook pushed Louisiana in front for the first time at 49-47.

The teams would trade buckets before the Lions took a 61-58 lead with a little over three minutes to play. Davis tied the score with 2:25 to play with a three, his third of the game. After the Lions missed a pair of free throws with 1:12 to play, the Cajuns had a chance to take the lead. Thomas found Garnett late in the shot clock at the top of the key and Garnett found nothing but net for the 64-61 lead with 42 seconds left. Garnett sealed the game with a pair of free throws after a missed three by the Lions as Louisiana held on for the win.

Next up the Cajuns welcome Lamar to the Cajundome on Saturday at noon.
